The Racer is a great wooden coaster! I love this ride!! Its great, that you can "high five" the riders, in the other train, as it comes along beside you. Also, keep in mind--back when both the Racer and Jack Rabbit were designed, the designers, had to use a slide rule, when they designed these coasters. These coasters, were designed and built, in the 1920s. As there were no computers, back then, to aid them, in the designing stages.
I was hestitant to review until I rode it again, which I did a week ago and my feeling is the same as 2001. Its fun but I didnt think it was great. I rode in the back car (I always do) and I didnt think the airtime was exceptional. The entrance to the station is great as well as the fact that is in one continuous track. However, I really didnt think the racing aspect worked so well.
for a very snappy and memorable coaster ride, the racer must be experienced from the rear car. it is otherwise, as others stated, a tame ride. there are no large drops and its not a speed machine. but place yourself in the very back seat and get that unique "they dont makem like they used to" short but sweet and fun classic racing coaster ride. i personally love john millers coaster designs. i mean, the man was just visionary. his genius is on evidence throughout racers layout. you never lose steam due to the clever use of terrain. miller has the dips bottoming out lower and lower as the ride goes, which results in a ride that smokes right to the final brakes. additionally, there are at least five good moments of air in the back seat and the final dip before the station is one of those old fashioned ejector seat drops that designers just cant seem to figure out how to do right these days. its a happy ending to a cool ride. the restoration of the station to its original look is totally inspired and it filled me with fantasies of those very well-attired patrons of the late 20s and 30s lining up to ride. i wish the original trains were still running, because they look awesome from the photos ive seen - unbroken bench types which were "updated" in the 60s with a whimsical polka-dot paint job. in any event, the PTC trains do the trick and have seat belt buckles that remind me of the seat belt buckles from a 1970s buick. bottom line - i love this ride!! i rode it about 10 times the day i was there. racer also gets extra points for the very clever "mobius strip" design. miller, in a very subtle and sneaky way, "folded" the mobius strip of the racer by mirror-splitting the trains out of the station, much like the rebel yell, but then thereafter runs the trains parallel to each other, like colossus, thus never returning them to the configuration they had when they began in the station. so you finish on the opposite side you began. i thought about it and i couldnt remember any track crossovers, but then it hit me. brilliant!
The Racer was a dissapointment. All of the air time hills had painful direction changes that jerks you from onwe side of the seat, to to the other. The train release system on one of the sides was malfunctioning, so one of the trains left earlier than the other, when they were supposed to leave togather. I really think this ride should be tuned up, and re-tracked.
This is a great ride, but it is lacking on airtime, unfortunately. The racing sensation always adds to a ride, and the paint-job is beautiful. But overall, I think it is of a lesser quality than K-woods other woodies
A true John Miller classic racing coaster that is alot of fun and gives you alot of airtime. The layout is great how you start on one side and end on the other. I still dont understand how they do this. It delivers good speed and on the 3 turns you can slap hands with the other racers which adds to the fun. Its a good stater coaster for children as well. The Racer is a wood sit down roller coaster. It was built in 1927. It is a racing coaster. It is 2,250' long, 73' tall, It lasts 1:32. It was built by Charlie Mach. It was designed by John Miller. I think it is also a mobious coaster.
I like this ride, after working at it all summer along with the jack rabbit i come to the conclusion that the jack rabbit is a little better. This ride is fun when the trains are fool with people because obviously it will go a lot faster than with just me in it. I rode this ride almost everyday and it really didnt do anything for me thrillwise. Its still a fun ride though.
Nice woody, but didnt really enjoy it that much. Still, its another great classic woody. It had a couple surprises, but the speed couldve been faster and had some more airtime. The racing aspects cool, but not as much fun as Hersheyparks Lightning Racer though. I really love how its mobius meaning that if you start out on the right side, youll come back on the left & vice versa. Ride it at least once just to see how you think it is. Still worth riding.
This is an awesome woodie that deserves several rides each time you visit the park! Be sure to have someone to compete with, whether its a friend or just a stranger who wants to race!
I rode "The Racer" five times last visit and had a blast every time! The line was 20 minutes long every time, but its well worth the wait!
Good ride for its age. Racing used to some of its highest potentaial to take an average ride to a good ride. Fairly smooth, slight pops of hair highlight the actual layout of the ride. Cool feature that your train enters station on opposite side of the one it left.
