A fine carousel, but it could benefit from a band organ and a restoration, both outward to deal with its appearance and inward to fix its mechanics; it is a pretty bumpy ride.
Beaches and classic carousels go hand-and-hand in my opinion. While York’s technically isn’t on the beach, it is a 2-3 minute walk from the beautiful York Beach, and what do you know? This small park is actually home to a wooden carousel. But don’t get your hopes up since that really is all that this small carousel has going for it in my opinion, and trust me, it is far from being a classic carousel.
Located on the Beachside entrance right next to the park’s incredible Ferris Wheel, the Merry-Go-Round is nestled in and fits in nicely with the park’s atmosphere. However, the carousel, while it does have wooden horses, appears to be incredibly small, which indeed it is. Also, I’m not too high on the ride’s color scheme. Maybe it has a band organ? Nope, never has. Just a muffled recording of one. This never has any line at all though thanks to its high capacity at least.
Now onto the ride itself, which was pretty poor in my opinion. My biggest complaint stems from the small footprint of the carousel, leading to me feeling very cramped during my ride. Not only that, but the carousel seemed very jerky in my opinion, and the movement just simply didn’t feel fluid in my opinion. The cycle was pretty darn long though; however, the ride is so poor that it outweighs this.
The Merry-Go-Round simply is one of the poorest carousels I’ve been on. Thanks to its smaller footprint, the ride was very cramped and jerky in my opinion. Never before have I hated a wooden carousel as much as I dislike this one. That being said, this definitely is passable in a visit to York’s though carousel-enthusiasts might want to check this out. Just keep your expectations low.
This ride is great, especially the paint job! I am really attached to it. I would reccomend this to people of all ages! And the operator they had when I was there was really nice! I was timing the carousel for a school extra credit project, and she gave me two dollars to go across the street and by some taffy.
This was an OK carousel. A nice wood ride but the movement was lacking and the tape recoded band organ wasnt even good. but its nice to see one of these older family carousels still going.
