Standard carrousel. I don't think I have ever been on a carrousel with seat belts... they even had them on the chariots where you can sit down to ride. Not that they would help much... the little plastic buckle would not hold anyone on. Funny how on the FAST derby racer, a ride that tries to throw you off, there are no safety devices, but on th is relatively tame cousin there are those crappy belts.

This has got to be the worst carousel mojo Ive ever felt. Regardless of age, they belt you in -- who approaches a girl in her 20s all by herself and demands she buckle up on a carousel that barely moves? The carousel is beautiful, and the Gavioli band organ is a treasure. The figures out in front of it are gorgeous. But the carousel isnt as well taken care of as it should be: the ears of the horse beside me were worn to the wood and its neck seam was visible. Its obvious Playland only cares for their larger, flashier rides that provide more thrills. Playland feels like a dead park; its staff is surly and lifeless, and the overwhelming overconcern for everyones safety stifles any joy to be had in the beauty and history of the park.

Playlands classic carousel is a true gem and it doesnt surprise me that a wonderful, classic park like Playland has a spectacular carousel like this. Located towards the center of the park, the Carousel is located in a small building. Generally a walk-on, the Carousel is just a true treat. It is absolutely beautiful. All of the masterfully carved horses are absolutely gorgeous and the organ, though not as good as the organs on other carousels, is decent. Also, Playland maintains this carousel exceptionally well. On Playlands Carousel you are restrained by a belt. Like many classic carousels, this one begins with a bell. The ride itself is nothing out-of-the-ordinary for a carousel and provides the relaxing and timeless ride that you expect from a carousel. Also, you get an exceptionally long cycle that lasts at least 5 minutes. The ride ends just as it begins with a bell ringing. Overall, Playlands Carousel easily is one of the best carousels that I have ever been on thanks to how well maintained it is by Playland. Anyone who enjoys carousels, especially classic carousels shouldnt dare miss this ride.

How appropriate for the NY Rye Playland to have a NY based Mangles Manufactured carousel. The Carousel looks amazing. It could have looked a little cleaner. but, Im sure the near by salt water doesnt to the brass any good on this ride. The Organ was nice but wasnt the best I have seen or herd. but added allot of charm. From the wood platform the the buildign itself its a ridable work of art.

This carousel is a true Gem. One of Charles Carmels masterpieces. The carousel is maintained very well. The one complaint is that the pipework of the original Gavioli band organ has been removed and replaced with new pipes and a glockenspeil (the organ plays very well but it doesnt sound anywhere near the amazing sound of the original Gavioli pipework which was removed in the 1990s)

For historic importance, rarity and maintenance, Ill give this carousel a 9. The Charles Carmel carvings are SPECTACULAR - here you will find his absolute best work, and Borellis enhancement of them is done in perfect taste. My only complaints are that the band organ - an absolute jewel Gavioli with mechanical figures - is horribly out of tune; Playland could really do well in giving it a little attention...and that the carousel is run WAY too slow! There is an original Mangels manufacturers plate to the right of the band organ, stating "Max speed 6 rpm" - being the carousel nerd that I am, I timed the rate at which Playland runs the machine - 3 rpm! No wonder it seems so slow. I was miffed to find that it never gained the momentum needed to utilize the floor slips, designed to let the horses swing out with the centrifugal force. This is a very rare feature in carousels, and its a crime that this one doesnt have the chance to show it off.

This is one of the finest traditional carousels in the country with a fine and unique historic band organ. A beautiful complement to the Derby Racer directly across the midway.

A very nice and old carousel. This ride is great to look at but rides like every other carousel. This ride is in great shape though. For this sites "target auidence" there is no reason to ride this over the Derby Racer.
