 Review of Soarin @ EPCOT

Have you ever wondered what flying over vast landscapes feels like? If so Soarin’ caters to those interests quite well. Anchoring EPCOT’s Land pavilion, Soarin’ is definitely one of the park’s most popular attractions, always garnering a 90 minute wait or so and is depleted of Fastpasses by mid-afternoon. Therefore to get on you either have to endure a painfully long wait or get a fastpass very early in the day, and I definitely suggest the latter if you want to ride. Well with the ride’s massive popularity it must be good, right?

Thankfully when I went in late August this year I encountered a 30 minute wait late in the day (most likely because of diminished crowds from Tropical Storm Fay). The wait was pretty bad in my opinion since it was essentially just a long corridor without any real theming or entertainment since the games were not functioning while I was there. Also, the line just seemed to move very slowly in my opinion and I just can’t imagine what a full 30 minute wait would be. After making it through the queue, there’s a brief instructional video on how to board and safety guidelines. Soon enough, I boarded by flight vehicle, which I definitely commend Disney on since the simple seatbelt restraint allows for freedom of motion to make to experience much more immerse.

However, I was disappointed in Soarin’. While all of the video was perfectly synced with the vehicles to give a good sensation of flying with gentle yet successful motions, my experience just was severely hampered by the fact that I was not riding in the top row, therefore causing my view to be obstructed by the dangling feet of riders above. Every time I was beginning to feel immersed in the entire experience, the nuisance of the feet above just ruined the whole mystique of the attraction in my opinion. Despite this, I can’t deny how breathtaking the images were with scenes such as the ocean, mountains, and Golden Gate Bridge, but I personally didn’t think the entire attraction flowed that well because of how randomly it bounced around from scene to scene.

While certainly a fun and unique attraction, Soarin’ is just over-hyped in my opinion. The images are great and the sensation of flying is good, but the ride just has some flaws that severely hampered my experience. Not only that, but the ride’s atypical 90 minute wait definitely would deter me from another reride most likely and the issue of the ride’s fastpasses depleting far too quickly. Despite these numerous short-comings in my opinion, definitely give Soarin’ a chance since you’ll probably enjoy it more than me since I’m probably one of the very few to not be overly impressed by the attraction.
