Review of Cyclone @ Six Flags New England

Excellent wood coaster. However this ride is not for those who like their rides smooth. But for those of us who enjoy a true "out of control" woodie, Cyclone cant be beat. The first drop was reprofiled this year, and though its not as intense as it was, the coaster is now faster overall than in years past. Back seat is the best. This is the only coaster that (in the last seat)I dont ride with hands in the air. It feels like the ride is REALLY out to get you. By the way, the SFNE website as well as several others are wrong about Cyclones speed. They have it listed as 45 miles per hour, same as Thunderbolt. This is incorrect. I remember articles in the newspaper when Cyclone was built, stating the speed was about 60 miles per hour. After riding it youll understand that there is NO WAY Cyclone is doing only 45. On a final note, the front of the coaster is LESS impressive than before the drop hill was altered. Ride in the back, its better than ever.

do you think it would have been smarter if they just made a clone of the original instead of there own?

No, Im glad they designed Cyclone the way it is. That original first drop was true terror. But theyve had so many problems over the years with trains taking a beating, that Im not surprised they reprofiled Cyclone this year. And hey, its still an excellent ride, I love the last section of the layout, when youre inside the superstructure, still gets me every time.

the only gripe I have about it is that its not as steep and does not go down as far. do you know why they raised the the drop 15 feet?

The story is that the PTC trains were battering the coaster, and the coaster was battering the trains. There are all kinds of stories as to how this all developed. A friend who worked there in the late 80s-early 90s said that some idiot got out of his lapbar and seatbelt and stood up, you can guess what happened to him. Riverside slowed the trains down (how this would keep people from getting out of Lapbars/seatbelts is beyond me)and changed the trains to some lighter model. Apparently THIS kind of train had real issues, the main one being they sometimes stopped before cresting the next hill. The PTC trains returned (good! much more comfortable!)but I guess the brakes stayed on the track. Apparently there was too much strain between train and track, both were needing overly large amounts of repair. So they went and reprofiled the first drop for less strain. This is what Ive been told, I have yet to have anyone verify any of it as of yet. One thing is for sure, since the trains dont have to navigate that steeply banked curve, they are faster than ever, but that steeply banked curve was also one of the best aspects of Cyclone. I think the consistantly high marks people give Cyclone says what a great layout the coaster has, despite the new first drop.

yes, I noticed the trains being rather heavier and bumpier than the morgans. although ptc trains are more comfortable they cant handle a rough coaster you feel every bump it has to offer. like wildcat at lake compounce in bristol connecticut. the ride is slow but it hurts alot. although another coaster called boulder dash at the same park has ptc trains also and have made it the # 1 wood coaster in the world. so it depends.

I have a theory why Cyclone was reprofiled. The bottom line -- number of riders was down! Even with two trains running and on a week day, the wait for a middle seat on Superman could be an hour and a half (which still is not too bad a wait for such a great coaster). But Cyclone, you could almost walk right on. Not a good sign for the future of the coaster. Too many years of smooth steel coasters have turned riders into cowards. The ironic thing is the Cyclone isnt any smoother, the deeply banked curve before the "fake out" turn to the left, and the "fake out" turn, still bang you into the side of your seat as always (this is NOT a complaint, I love this part of Cyclone). Despite the lack of change to the overall ride, the butchery seems to have worked in the mind of the public, Cyclone seemed to have longer lines last year than in 2000.
