Review of Phantoms Revenge @ Kennywood
1 Rating Posted by: PhantomNik on 7/1/2002 5:23:00 PM
Having grown up in western PA for nearly my entire life, I’ve always had a soft spot for my nearby home park of Kennywood. As I’ve grown older and gotten into the hobby of visiting amusement parks and riding roller coasters, I’ve come to discover just how lucky I am to be so close to a real gem of a park. Kennywood, along with their owners, constantly maintains a beautiful balance between old and new, as you can find rare and priceless older flats there alongside some of the newest thrill machines. That same philosophy applies to their coasters as well. For the longest time the biggest "calling cards" of the park were their 3 old-fashioned (and wonderful!) wooden coasters. They had the steel coaster Laser Loop when I was a kid (which actually scared the crap out of me! LOL), but never anything jaw dropping. That all changed in 1991, when my little home park jumped right into the thick of the "coaster wars" by introducing the revolutionary Steel Phantom. As a teenager, I was awe-struck by this mammoth steel beast that was being erected here. It plunged 225 feet (the biggest drop anywhere, at that time) and went a ridiculous 80 mph! Kennywood could finally lay claim to something "big", and it was a ride like no other! I loved that thing when it opened, and it was the coaster, I feel, that launched me full-bore into the roller coaster fanaticism that I possess today. For that, Steel Phantom, I will always be grateful.

As the years passed by, however, the ride began aging, and aging poorly, as most Arrow "Mega-Loopers" tend to do. I had gotten to the point where I could only ride the thing twice when I’d visit – once when I got there, and then once right before leaving. In between I’d deal with the head pain that would often result. The wonderful ferocity that it had, and I loved when I was younger, was beginning to tear itself apart. Fast forward to 2000, when the park announced that Steel Phantom was to be no more; and I like many others was disheartened to lose this park icon. But then, park management made one of the best decisions they ever made. A new coaster would be reborn out of the old Phantom’s ashes. This new coaster would retain the real highlights of the old one – the first 2 tremendous drops, while discarding the head-banging inversions and constructing a rejuvenated second half that would be inversion free. The park would now have a hypercoaster, and Phantom’s Revenge was born. I was an ecstatic coaster dork!

Phantom’s Revenge towers over the park with its mighty first hill. The Phantom acts as guardian of the park, overlooking all corners of it. During reconstruction, the park decided to repaint the coaster as well, and selected one of the most aesthetically appealing color schemes I’ve ever seen on a coaster. With slick black supports and a vibrant lime green track, the whole coaster just looks "Phantom-esque". The queue goes under and alongside the lift hill, and you enter the station passing under the Phantom himself and his mighty cape. The crews here on Phantom work very efficiently and the line moves at a brisk pace, keeping waits to a minimum. On busier days the park runs both trains and the line absolutely flies, with waits for this stellar coaster often only around 10 minutes! After a slight wait, it’s time to board the wonderfully redesigned trains by Morgan. These are some of the best coaster trains around, as they are very roomy with just a seat belt and a lap bar from the side. This comfort is a blessed change from the OTSRs that plagued the original. After an efficient and quick check of restraints, it’s time to depart on our journey with this wonderfully amusing (and equally sadistic) Phantom. Bwah, ha, ha, ha!!

The 160 foot lift hill remains from the original installation, and it provides a slow and methodical climb to its peak, providing plenty of excitement and anticipation to build. This phantom wants you to think long and hard about the journey he has prepared for you. Like

Excellent review of what is my number 1 coaster right now! I agree - going through Thunderbolt does make PR much more exciting. I too enjoy the ending ejector air, it has you flying out of your seat several times! Good point too about the trains, they are pretty slick. Ill have to try sitting in the very back next time Im at Kennywood.

Thanks a lot! Ya, Phantoms Revenge is an unbelievable hypercoaster. Its amazing what they did to redesign this coaster considering what limited space they have. It was my number 1 for a good while too, but I just had to bump it down a notch to number 2 after going to CP last year and riding the surreal Millennium Force! One thing I never mentioned in my review - I think the colors on PR are perfect! That slick black with the neon green track definitely stands out (in a good way). It just has the look of a menacing Phantom!!

Thanks for the compliment on my review, meowmix! And youre right, the 2nd drop is 230 ft....for some reason I used to think it was 235, I might have saw it somewhere. Anyway, you are very observant, grasshopper (bows head) I went ahead and fixed the review.

Ya I know, I used to be around the site more often, but its just tougher with work and such to find time to stroll by. But, Im making an attempt to better that and add some more reviews, comments, etc. I still feel this is the premier site of its kind!

Yea, the same goes for me. Except my excuse is Im out partying too much and with this lady too much. Im not saying thats bad, just saying I miss the occasional fight over nothing.

I know what you mean. The occasional fights over nothing were pretty cool, and the way you took part was always top notch! It always would crack me up when youd be arguing over nothing in particular, yet still wind up gettin someone all fired up (who couldnt get we were just joking around!) LOL Yea, being with a lady "too much" is not at all a bad thing!! Thats pretty awesome actually. I hope it continues to go well for you with that. So, just out of curiosity, have you ever been to or plan to go to Kennywood? Its a great traditional park and Phantoms Revenge just rocks! (Hence my username here) If you ever are going to KW and need some tips, let me know.....Id be glad to share them (and that goes for anyone else too!)

Freshly updated! I decided that since this is a coaster that I hold dear, along with the fact that it is after all my "username-sake", it was time to update the review with my newer reviewing style. The older one was my first review here, and you could definitely tell!

Nice review....but I need a little help....please. If you have read my other reivews, you know that a friend and myself undertook a journey riding the top 10 (actually 9) steel coasters in the world according to the Golden Tickets. Take a guess at which coaster was the only disappointment on our list?

I loved the trains and restraints but got very little of the legendary air that this ride offers. We only rode one time (in the 2nd car from the front) since the slow moving station crew was only running one train and the line backed up in a hurry. We were first in the park but after 1 ride the line was back out of the station.

The woodies were all running two trains and I had a blast on them but PR was a disppointment on what I thought might possibly contend as one of my favorite coasters ever. The logo is cool and the large drop is great but I was simply not blown away. I have not reviewed this ride yet here but have a ranked it an 8 on another site as a step below Magnum and the B and M hypers. I am going back up that way this summer so Ill take any hints you can offer.

My hint, shag9004, would be to stop smoking crack (Im kidding). Ill admit Ive never actually ridden in the 2nd car from the front, but in my customary seats at the extreme ends of the train, this thing has monster air. When did you last ride PR? I ask because Ive heard gut-wrenchingly distressing rumors that trim brakes may have been installed sometime during the last season. If true, this may explain PRs underwhelming performance during your visit. Oh, God, please dont let them have ruined PR....

^^Thanks. Ok, as a Kennywood "veteran", here are some tips/hints for you. First, I will admit that the park always begins the day running just 1 train on Phantoms Revenge. I dont necessarily agree with that philosophy, but I usually try to get there for when the gates open up at 10:30 and then head straight to Phantom, which usually puts me only about 10-25 people deep in the line for when the coaster opens up. I know a 1 train wait is longer, but as the day wears on they will add a 2nd train by early afternoon if the crowd warrants it. I cant explain the slow moving crew though, as Ive never encountered that myself. As for the ride, I have had a small handful of rides like you have described, but they are very RARE. This is a coaster you have to ride multiple times to really see what it can deliver. And I concur with Timberman, the extreme ends of the coaster are the money seats. The very front, while usually having a long line, is wonderful with a real feel for the coasters blistering speed. The airtime is quite good, but not as amazing as when you head towards the back. My advice, go to the very back row. It has a shorter line than the front, and the airtime felt there is ridiculous and monstrous. I would be stunned if you werent blown away after a ride in the very back. I personally feel that it blows Magnum away! (and I am a fan of Magnum) It sucks you had a less than stellar ride, but give this coaster another couple chances in the back - Im positive your ride will be infinitely better.

T-man, the rumor I heard was that they were placed on the tail end of the ride somewhere to aid in two train operation. However, they found them to be unnecessary and keep them off almost all the time. And if they are on, they surely dont do much, at least from my roughly 10 or so rides on it in 2007. I actually feel that this thing keeps getting better with age, like a fine wine, as every year my rides on PR just continue to blow me away! In 2007 the airtime felt stronger than ever, and it even seemed faster than usual, providing some of the most stellar rides Ive ever had on it. So, from my experiences, I would say that you have nothing to fear as they have not "ruined" the Phantom one bit.

Nice tips from both of you guys. We were very limited on time during our trip and only had a couple of hours to spend there. I was going absolutely nuts waiting in line ahile watching ride ops eat popcorn instead of checking restraints. I look forward to getting back up there and getting multiple laps on the PR. Thanks again!!
