OK this is pretty cool, so I'm watching Modern Marvels and the topic is logging.
From the tops of mountains the loggers built flumes (wooden troughs) to get the logs from the top of the mountains to the mills donwhill and up to 54 miles away.
Maybe this is common knowledge for people living in logging areas but is news to this NYC kid.
The loggers even made makeshift boats to ride down the tamer stretches of the flume.
Does anyone know if any park ever promoted, through pictures, the origins of the log flume in their queue?

i didn't see that but I new the History. The own fall though was the flumes moved very fast and people would loose limbs after being caught on branches and such.

Wish I had seen that - sounds pretty interesting. One thing I didn't know until recently is that Astroland's flume is the first of its kind on the East Coast... I guess it was a bit of a novelty, back in 1964...

I heard about this also. They use to do that around here (Tennessee), but instead they used the rivers to carry the logs down. This is where they got the concept of Daredevil Falls over at Dollywood.
