Review of Alice in Wonderland @ The Great Escape

Alice in Wonderland is a true Disney classic thanks to its zany story and crazy settings. Inevitably, various theme park attractions have been spun off based upon this classic attraction, with most of them themed to the movie’s famous tea party scene courtesy of the Mad Hatter. But often overshadowed among these takeoffs from the movie is definitely the most unique of them, The Great Escape’s Alice in Wonderland walkthrough.

Secluded in its own little section towards the center of the park, this attraction really captures the atmosphere of the novel thanks to its isolation from the rest of the park. The tall wooden fences around the perimeter of the attraction along with the tall trees overhead that provide some highly-coveted shade really capture the feel of Alice in Wonderland, adding to the illusion of the attraction. Also to note, the attraction itself is totally hidden from view until entering the attraction, making the attraction much more exciting since what’s in store for riders is a surprise. And don’t worry at all about lines because since this is a walkthrough, just walk on in and enjoy.

Once inside the attraction, it’s instantly apparent that this is a truly classic attraction that can’t be found at most corporate parks. The beginning and conclusion of the attraction are composed of a brief indoor segment, but I personally enjoy the exterior segment the most. Literally the entire walkthrough is larger than life, as kids can climb over flowers and blades of grass and adults can just admire the uniqueness of the attraction. However, the attraction suffers from two downfalls- its relatively short length and more importantly, a lack of interactive elements.

Despite the attraction’s flaws, Alice in Wonderland is a nice change of pace to escape the hectic pace of the park. It’s simply a relaxing attraction that very few parks would even bother to keep around nowadays, but I definitely appreciate Six Flags appreciating the park’s historical roots and not demolishing this classic for a more technologically advanced attraction. However, despite the ride’s nostalgic feel, it is a sub-par attraction overall in my opinion. Definitely save some time for this neat, little classic since it’s really unlike any other attraction I’ve come across. Just don’t be expecting theming at the level of Universal or Disney.
