Review of Great Bear @ Hersheypark

Wow, I forgot to write a review about this coaster...oh well. I rode it last summer but the ride is very vibrant in my mind. This is my favorite invert that I have ever ridden. I have only ridden like four, but I personally enjoyed this ride more than the raptor and alpengeist.

The one thing that I dont like about inverts is when the ride is very compact and basicially, 10 pounds of crap is stuffed into a 5 pound bag.

Yes, the GB is short, but it didnt come across as disorienting as alpengeist and the raptor. IMO, the great bear is a perfect mix of smooth, flowing elements, including some unique sections.

The most apparent section that im talking about is of course the first helix. Most (actually all of the helixs that I have experienced,) helixs jam you into your seat and put massive positive gs on your body. Not the great bear. Its a whole lot like an inverted loop. The only difference is that the helix is sustained longer.

Just before I got into my seat, the person behind me said, "Make sure your shoes are tied tight" I knew what he meant, but I never would have thought that that little turnaround would be so intense.

After the helix, this coaster honestly felt like a floorless. It was very smooth and the connection of the elements was seamless. Whizzing past the sooperdooperlooper was awesome.

Like many people, my only complaint was the length of the ride. Honestly, it didnt bother me much, but another element or two would have made this a better coaster than it already is.

The great bear will stand as my favorite invert until I ride something better. Unfortunately, I dont think thats going to happen for a while.

Although I do like Alpengeist and Raptor slightly better this is still an unbelievable ride. The length doesnt better me I am more of a quality guy and what they have on this is top notch.

Yeah, I was kind of disappointed with alpengeist. Honestly, Im still not sure which I prefer, GB or Raptor. Ive only ridden each once, but i was impressed.

I cant imagine be dissapointed with Alpengeist, but I have them all ranked right next to each other on my top 20.

Alpengeist was a letdown for me. Great Bear was awsome though. Skimming over the water, pathways, and superdooperlooper was great. Its manuevers flowed really nicely.

Alpengeist just didnt seem natural or flowing to me. Thats just what I like in a rollercoaster.

Hey Swimace, I remember we used to be on the same page with Alpengeist...we both said it was kinda choppy and the cobra roll was too rough. Well, just to let ya know, they slam the brakes a little tougher this year which makes the ride MUCH more enjoyable. Just thought Id mention that in Alpengeists defense But yes, good review on Great Bear. Hopefully Ill be able to ride it this year

Great Bear was short but smooth. The ride just flowed really nicely over the landscape. I was so dissapointed with Alpengeist, because I was expecting it to blow all of the other inverts out of the water. I am almost always against putting trim brakes on a ride, but in the case of Alpengeist, trims would help reduce the sudden lateral Gs at the top.

^exactly...I hate trim brakes, and I must admit they kick in pretty hard this year, but it made the ride so much better. They definitely didnt ruin the ride like many trim brakes do.... I am glad to hear Great Bear has a smoother layout, though. Its important for coaster elements to flow together

Why do people hate trim brakes so much? There are times when they are beneficial, especially on a ride that is the #1 of the two people who posted before me

The only reason that I can find that I dont like them on some occasions is that they take away from the normal flow of the ride. That is why I like it when designs can be made that dont use trim brakes and the train can be slowed down slightly in other manors. I dont despise them. I see their need in the world. They are beneficial in some cases, but not all of them and I feel that it takes away from the ride a little bit. Its not that much, but the hault and then all of that really takes from the rides flow.

I found no reason at all to slow down Alpengeist. It was an excellent ride and I found no real roughness, excessive force on that ride. Great Bear was smoother, but I didnt feel Alpengeist was rough though.

Ok, lemme rephrase what I said about trim brakes: There are times when they are absolutely necessary and actually add to the ride, one case being Apollos Chariot like Bob said. The drop out of the brake run is one of the best drops period, and is only effective because of these brakes. Other rides, like Loch Ness Monster for instance, have killer trims going down drops. On Loch Ness Monster, the drop going into the first loop is absolutely ruined by a set of trims. Even ascending Apollos 2nd hill, a set of trims noticably interupts the natural flow of the ride, but the airtime is still so phenominal that you forget about the momentary disappointment. My point is, trims can either make or "brake" a ride

Trim brakes get a bad name from rides that misuse them. One infamous case is Mean Streak. One case that Ive experienced first hand is Montus. Montu was so much beter before it was trimmed. The trims make the batwing and the second half of the ride so much less intense.

^Where exactly are the trims on Montu? Ive always wondered because I hear so many horrible things about them....

OK, thanks I guess it doesnt hurt the ride too much, because it is still a lot of peoples favorite invert...

its still mine, but before the trims the ride was beyond words
