Review of The Train @ Busch Gardens Williamsburg
0 Rating Posted by: BobFunland on 3/24/2005 8:54:00 PM
I am debating this rating a lot. I do have a reputation (or so Ive read) of being conservative with my 10s, which I cant deny, and I am stetched between a 9 and a 10 here. First, I would have to say that any park with a well-kept steam train is ok in my book, and such locomotives should at least get a 8. I took one ride, from Festia Italy to New France, and I enjoyed my ride a bunch. The one bad thing was that I went in the dead part of late winter, so I didnt get to see the worlds most beautiful park at its peak, which more than anything is why I settled with a 9 until I get to visit during the summer or fall. The ride was still fun, going through the woods and getting a glimpse of the Clydsdale stables. The rest of the route looked good, especially those picturesque bridges. Now for the locomotives, the part of the ride which makes it so great. The one that I actually rode was the Alpen Express, which was beautiful, but when I caught my eye on Der Hochbeinige firing in the New France station, I was in awe. It was one of the most beautiful trains I had ever seen, well kept and still shining in its vivid crimson and gold-trimmed decor. It was truly love at first sight, and I was fortunate enough to see it running later in the day, chugging along majestically, but unfortunately, I did not get to ride it personally, only its sister. For now, I will settle with a 9, but do not be suprised if I visit in the summer and bump it up to a 10, because the trains were up to par with the Dollywood locos, but the ride just couldnt compare due to the time of year, which yall have to take into consideration when reading this.

I was looking at your pics you pointed out over on SFOGNet, (They are great by the way-Im glad somebody takes pictures of things besides roller coasters!)and I think you may have ridden on the Alpen Express instead of the Balmoral Castle. The Alpen Express is the short green train, while the Balmoral Castle is the blue train. BGW has three trains total, the Alpen Express (Green), The Balmoral Castle (Blue) and the Der Hochbeinige (Crimson Red).

Interestingly, from what I understand the Alpen Express never got its own spiel recorded, so they just re-used the spiel for the Balmoral Castle. So, the Alpen Express incorrectly identified during the ride! Just a little trivia for ya.

Yep, you are correct, I should have known since I actually took photos of the name. I was just going by my pitiful memory and the Park Trains website. Edited, and thanks

Solid review Bob. It is refreshing to see well thought out reviews about rides other than roller coasters. Rides like the trains make amusement parks into theme parks.
