Review of Rolling Thunder @ Six Flags Great Adventure

I have actually had the pleasure of riding this coaster when it raced, and it is a joy. It has not raced in several years now however, and it in need of some major retracking and matainence. With luck, a repainting is not the only thing this coaster gets in the off-season, as the layout is well worth saving.

UPDATE: Rode it for the first time since the retracking in the off season and I have to say it was a much improved ride. They still were not racing it, thus it doesnt get a point bump, but the turnaround, though still a bit noisy, felt smooth, and the ride overall ran much faster then it has in years. It even offered up some decent airtime. It also looks great with the new paint job. They seem to still be working on one of the tracks.

Not compleatly My brother hates it just as much. The fact this coaster is so neglected is a larg reason I dont like it and yes i blam Six flags for that.

Black, youre lucky Ive not seen this racing for years. This isnt a bad coaster just not special when compared to Great Adventures best coasters. Wasnt there a time they were going to rename the park Six Flags New Jersey?

Sure, but I am a fan of wood, and that is it in that park. As I said, it really does have a good layout.

I was at Eastcoaster 03 yesterday, and the SFGAdv rep said that not only is RT getting a new paint job, but the rear turnaround trackage has been completely replaced. At the end of her presentation she said that "for all of your questions about Rolling Thunder, the answer is yes," before anyone could ask any questions. While vague, this could mean that RT may again race.

As for Six Flags New Jersey, I have heard that rumor before as well, though I dont think it was ever really true, particually since the aquisition of Sea World in Ohio and changing the name from Six Flags Ohio to Six Flags Worlds of Adventure.

That is very interesting about that, I dont know if why it doesnt (didnt) race was mechinical or something like a lack of power, emplyoies or queue lines.

I think it may be a combonation of things. With the short lines that RT usually has it really is probably just cheaper and easier to run just one side. I think the maintance issue may have been a big factor too. Those trains are heavy (they are PTCs after all), and it probably puts a lot of stress on a structure that already is not well taken care of.

I really hope they do race it again, and what I would love to see is a change in the station design (like that will ever happen) where you enter from the inside of the tracks, thus it would be easier for friends and families to race each other. I do not think it would be that difficult to do, they would just have to switch around the queues. The only drawback would be they would have to only let people into the station on a per train basis (like the Racer at Kennywood), since the inside of the station is not big enough to accomidate seperate lines for each seat.

Well, that is just dreaming, but it would be nice and customer friendly (something SF is not known for).
