Review of Mystery Mine @ Dollywood
2 Rating Posted by: ginzo on 4/15/2007 10:23:00 PM
Dollywoods Mystery Mine is one of the most anticipated new coasters of 2007. The park has surely outdone themselves on this one. Mystery Mine, like many of Dollywoods other attractions, doesnt fall neatly into one conventional ride category. Its basically a roller coaster with a few dark ride sections thrown into the mix. The theming quality is outstanding. Florida park bigots suck on this, because this measures up to anything in Orlando. The animatronic vulture that greets you as you approach the queue is outstanding. The queue itself is full of fine details, and it has a nice eerie song to get you in the mood for the ride. The ride itself is pretty fun. Its not overly intense, which is perfect because this is a family oriented attraction. The drops and turns are fun. And the ride is not at all rough, which proves that Gerstlauer has come a long way over the years. The two vertical lift hills are especially fun, and they add tremendously to the ride experience. The finale is, of course, the best part of the ride. You get excellent hangtime right before the rollover, or whatever that last element is called. Although this is a stellar attraction, I do not believe it to be a top 10 ride. Its a little bit too short and lacking in overall intensity for me to rate it as such. Unfortunately, I only got one ride on it yesterday, as mother nature was not cooperating. I strongly look forward to going back to reride this excellent ride some day.

my only question is how tall are you?

An inch or two over 6 foot.

Gerstlauers steel rides have never been rough to my knowledge, but almost all of them are overseas as custom mouse type rides or Eurofighters. I wish we got some of those sweet mouse layouts with all the theming. I think they got a bad rap due to their woodie trains which have those hard lap bars. Regardless, The Legend has never been the same since they took them off.

Thanks, Ive heard these are better for tall people (63 here) but one of my taller friends thought it was kinda rough, whatever, Ill judge for myself soon. The MOA spinner got pretty darn rough and I rode it no more than 18 months after opening.

Ive heard some people say that Speed at Oakwood is rough. Mystery Mine frankly isnt nearly as extreme as that ride is. Although Mystery Mine is a great attraction, Im hoping to get a few more thrills out of Maverick. Im going to have to wait until May for that.

I think you will get more than "a few more thrills" out of Maverick. I predict that its going to be the best overall ride in the park. Breaking records isnt everything.

Youre right about that Pete. Record breaking coasters arent always the best ride experiences overall. To me, most of them are gimmicks. The exception to that rules Millennium Force because it has a decent overall ride, but the rest of them, a la Top Thrill Dragster, Kingda Ka, & SheiKra, are mostly gimmick rides that do good on their first year & end up being OK rides the following years.

Sheikra rules, but i agree with ttd.

I think Montu is better than Sheikra. Sheikra is fun, but I can see how it could be considered gimmicky. I think the floorless modification will probably noticeably improve Sheikra, especially if they also extend the time where you hang over the drop (fat chance).
