California Screamin is an outstanding roller coaster both to look at and to ride. It spans the entire back side of the Paradise Pier section of the park, with two or three trains at any given time navigating the steel-that-looks-like-wood course. The launch is great, set right on the water. It is followed by an awesome hill and drop, with another equally large hill and drop coming later. There are also a couple of spirals, the loop around the Mickey ears, and the very fun triple jump that actually gives some decent Intamin airtime. This is a very long ride, which is also super smooth and amazingly efficient. One more thing that has to be mentioned is the soundtrack. There is a great musical track synched with the manuevers of the ride. My one complaint is that I always tend to end up on the train that does not have its speakers working. This coaster is certainly a 10 even without the soundtrack, but it does frustrate me to hear all of the other trains pull into and out of the station playing music only to have mine be silent. I am not recommending pulling those trains, as I do not want to reduce capacity. But I am requesting that those speakers get fixed! At any rate, I will not end the review on a negative note. This is a great coaster ride for the Disneyland Resort. Unquestionably the biggest, baddest coaster on property, yet appropriate enough for the kids as well as die-hard enthusiasts alike. It appears that the theming of this one and the Sun Wheel will flip-flop during the make-over of California Adventure. While the Sun Wheel will lose its sun emblem and instead get a giant Mickey face, the coaster loop will lose its Mickey ears and instead get a sun emblem. I kind of like the Mickey ears, so I hope all the new theming works out.
