Review of Carousel @ Lake Compounce
-4 Rating Posted by: praxis on 8/17/2003 6:15:00 PM
Its a merry go round. Good for kids or romantic couples. Im less impressed by the histotrical nature of this ride, as I know Bristol CT has its own carousel museum.

Just because Bristol has a carousel museum doesnt mean you should bring down the history of this machine. That doesnt make sense at all. "Its a merry go round" - what a generalized snub.

Not to mention Bristol does not have a carousel. It does have a museum, but the museums machine is in Hartford, not Bristol. This carousel is an excellent machine. It is extremely well kept and even has a brand new structure. This is a horrible, uninformed review.

Au contraire, mon frere. The thing is, if youre looking at the Lake Compounce carousel as a historic artifact... when you go to the park itself, youre not going to learn much about history. And the ironic part is that there is a museum in the very same town which WILL give you more on said history. If youre judging this as a ride, its ok, but no great shakes. (Every carousel is gonna be pretty much the same in terms of what it does.) It is nice-looking, yes, but no moreso than several others Ive seen.

I HAVE been to said museum, in fact, you can find a short report here:

Not all carousels are created equal, and not all do the same thing. You want to see some of the better examples, visit Knoebels, Astroland or Hersheypark, while some bad examples can be found at Williams Grove or Camden Park. I have seen machines that have all standers, all jumpers, machines with ring catches and many more without. I have seen machines that run backwards and machines that run clockwise as opposed to the more common counter-clockwise. I have even seem a machine that has all roasters on it (it no longer exsists saddly). This one is above average, it is well cared for and run well, as I have already stated.

In no way should it be compared to the museum in Bristol, that while excellent, does not even have a machine on site. They are two different things.

Perfectly put, Cyclonic. I can always count on you to make an intelligent statement about carousels...now, if only more folks could understand that all carousels are not created equal...call us fanatics.

You should also visit the historic Philadelphia Toboggan Carousel inside the Pallisades Mall in West Nyack, New York.

Thanks, papa - I am trying to arrange a visit to that PTC - looking forward to it.

The Carousel at The Lake is well above average. The Band organ not a recording spills music into the midway adding to the parks charm wile pleasing the rides of there Historic carousel. The carousel and its new building are beautiful and the area around it well landscaped. In no way is this ride below average to every other carousel.

Well i think carousels suck thats my opinion.
mrceagle on 11/5/2004 9:35:59 PM said:
The question is why do they suck. you have to have somthing to ride after your eat. A carousel is prity much the only sure thing ride for that at any park.
the bus on 11/5/2004 10:46:44 PM said:
Why dont you go see a show thats what I do after I eat. When the shows over i get back to the thrills.
the bus on 11/5/2004 10:54:40 PM said:
Y do they suck because i think its boring sitting on a plastic horse that goes around in a circle.the carousel is for little kids and people who dont like thrill rides.I myself wouldnt waste my time for a carousel.Thats why mrceagle i think they suck.
mrceagle on 11/5/2004 11:21:30 PM said:
For starters many classic parks like Lake Compounce, Canobie Lake, Knobles, etc have Wood horses. they arnt boring by many peaples standerds. in fact the carousel is a much larger aspect of a park then any other ride. Its always on the planing bord of a new park. You can think what you like but remember that its not a Kiddie ride. Its a Family attraction that has been around far longer then you. and I do often watch shows. they get old at most parks when youve sen then 3 or more times over. and some parks dont have shows.
the bus on 11/7/2004 6:00:02 PM said:
thanks mrceagle for the history lesson but i still wouldnt waste my time to ride them.

If you think they suck, fine - clearly, theres not much that I, or any of the other informed folks on this fine site, can say to change your mind. This discussion has come up before, and its a little pointless to even bother addressing your opinion. I will say, however, that your method of jumping in and saying, unsolicited, "Well i think carousels suck thats my opinion", especially considering your brand-new membership on the site, was pretty sad. So, despite my abundant ability to explain what makes carousels so incredibly important in the grand scheme of amusement park and American history, in this case, it just isnt worth it. Just do me a big favor, all right? Keep staying away from them - youre not worth giving them a second thought.

Lucky you, anon - between the museum, Bushnell Park and Lake Compounce, you have some wonderful resources.

I enjoy the carousels at most parks, at least the good ones. There is a beautiful one at the Erie zoo. However in a humorous disagreement with MRC the SICKEST I have ever felt on a ride was the carousel at Kentucky Kingdom. They also have a nice one at the Louisville zoo. It appears that zoos may be the new Carousel hot bed.

You actually got sick off a carousel. I guess that can hapon. but still they are one of the best family attractions out there.

I set on a gondola then it started spinning also, it was just awful.

Prestin/Barberi carousels have a Tea cup gondela on some of there carousels. it was probubly one of those.

Yuck - sounds like a little too much for me, as well. I recall seeing an archival photograph of an Allan Herschell carousel (dating to about 1910 or so), that had spinning tubs onboard, as well. I just thought, oh, lordie.. no wonder those were manufactured for only a short time...
coaster05 on 2/26/2005 8:44:14 AM said:
Yea it was bad so Adriahna what is your feeling about carousel popping up at a lot of zoos.
adriahna on 2/26/2005 10:57:00 PM said:
Well, Im actually curious about that - are the machines showing up at zoos youve noticed newly manufactured? I basically pay attention to the status of the vintage machines (1870s - 1930s), and where they operate. One of my earliest carousel memories is of the old PTC that used to be at the Cincinnati Zoo - its now in California. I think that was an exception, though - and it was moved to CA in the 1970s. I have a feeling that the machines youve seen in zoos are modern Chance or such machines. As well, there are some carousels that were basically grassroots efforts, with animals carved by artisans and volunteers.

Thats what I was guessing that they may be newer, but I remember reading something about the one in Louisville. Old or new they are both awesome carousels and after reading at Knoebels how they almost disappeared this zoo idea seems to be good for their future. Thanks for the info.

The newer Fiberglass carousels arnt that expensive. Its an easy upcharge atraction at a zoo wich normaly caters to familys. you figure its a couple buck to ride and your goingto get at least a third of your atenders to ride it. but I mostly see new carousels at zoos.
