My first coaster ride ever was on this, and this probably is my favorite coaster. Great airtime, although it sometimes makes me jam my stomach into the bars. Way better than Twister. Opening tunnel is good too. Worth the usually short wait.
When I first saw Phoenix I thought that it looked rather small… and compared to the neighboring Twister, it does look rather unassuming. However once I rode it I quickly changed my mind. This is one incredible coaster. Designed by Herb Schmeck and opened in 1947 as the Rocket in Texas, it was relocated to Knoebels in the early 1980s and re opened in 1985. Right off the bat you are sent into a dark tunnel that takes you to the bottom of the lift hill. From the lift hill you are send down the first drop, into a fast turn around, and then back down through the structure again. The second turn around is taken at high speed and you then hit a double dip as you go toward the final turn. After the final turn you are flying over bunny hops back into the station. This coaster doesnt let up from the first drop until you hit the breaks at the end. This I rate as my favorite coaster. Recommendation: For everyone! Dont let the appearance fool you… this coaster really packs a punch!
(added on 7/22/2002) Believe it or not, there was actually something that could IMPROVE this great coaster... ride it in the rain! Talk about fast!
It was an O.K. ride. I might have rated it higher if I was not expecting more. Some of the air-time on the coaster actually hurt me. And to me, I dont really like getting air time from bunny hills. I like getting it from going down a steep hill at a fast pace.
Just a fantastic coaster. Proof that a coaster doesnt have to be huge or new to be great. Incredible ejector air. So much big air, its practically a stand up woodie! Best ridden near the front, but excellent ridden anywhere.
Delivers a great ride from start to finish. It may not be the fastest wooden coaster, but the airtime is incredible. A must ride for all coaster enthusiasts that appreciate airtime.
A fantastic coaster -hats off to Herb Scmeck for the original design and the folks at Knoebels for saving this classic. Airtime and lots of fun. A coaster this great deserves a home like this great park. Dont miss the Flyer while there - you control this ride!
In my opinion this is the greatest coaster on the planet. It is not the biggest but it has more air time than many larger wooden coasters. It tears throught the course with blinding speed. The airtime on the final camelback is the most intense air i have ever felt. Front seat is great but the back is better.
Along with the merry-go-round this is what makes knobles my favorite park
My very favorite coaster!!! AMAZING airtime... I once counted 13 points of air! The first and third seats are the best.
The Phoenix is my favorite coaster in the park. Its fast, old fashioned, and nostalgic. Lots of air over the bunny hills, and really fun !
