About 6 years ago, this was my first rollercoaster ever. Returning after 6 years, I notice its the best woodie here by far. Loud journey to the top with bear sounds out of a speaker and hearing clincks of the gears rising you up. Big drops and tons of bunny hops. Terrific at night. Everybody goes crazy when they come to the tunnel and Id warn you not to put your hands up in the tunnel just in case since it could be bad if your arms are really long.
This isnt the worst coaster out there but it isnt the best either. It has a great setting in the woods. It seems to me that all wooden coasters should be in the woods, but I guess it really doesnt matter if the ride is good. This one offers a solid amount of airtime and a not too rough a ride. If there is one major drawback, it would be the speed. It didnt seem to be that fast to me, especially as it struggled to get up the hills. But perhaps it is that way to reduce bumping around and creating a much more smooth ride. Overall, this is an above average wooden coaster and actually one of the best coasters in the park, period.
ive always felt kinda bad for the grizz. it seemed to me that its parents, kings entertainment co., put all its love on its first born...the beast, and then three years later had a few extra bucks lying about so they birthed the statistically impaired short bus riding son, the grizz. the two siblings resemble each other in some obvious ways. they both sit in the forest and rely on hype, mystique and far off screams to draw in riders, because they are not visible from the thoroughfares of the parks. they are both rickety woodies that give a tough ride. but the beast, however, the grizz certainly is not. the beast is the humdiddelydinger of all humdiddelydangs for the modern age. the grizz is...well...a pretty cool ride with short lines and can be enjoyed on its own...but please dont hurt its feelings by bringing up mr. superstar over in cinncinati. to top that, i remember seeing pictures in the 80s or early 90s of a coaster somewhere else (cali), that had the exact same layout. so not only was the grizz an afterthought child, but they bought the sperm at a clone bank!! recently the grizz had another blow to its manhood when paramount cut down a ton of trees that border the grizzly property, so now theres a portion of the ride thats not in the woods. what a drag! but allow me to say that the grizzly can deliver a good coaster ride. it in fact gets better as it goes, climaxing in the famous tunnel. it feels more powerful and suggestive than the other woodies in the park. the grizzly also gets a plus because the big turnaround that goes over the loading station always rocks back and forth when the loud trains thump over. people seeing this from the queue may have some doubts about whether the ride is sound, but i tell you it was doing that 17 years ago when i first rode it, and its hasnt fallen over....yet.
Not too bad a ride, some airtime, a decent drop, a cool tunnel. Enjoyable enough.
Grizzly is a great wooden roller coaster.
The best place to ride is in the very front of the coaster. And the best time to ride Grizzly is at night. Because its dark and you got the woods. Which makes it a awesome night ride.
The setting for this ride is perfect: nestled deep in the woods away from pretty much all civilization. The air is great, the laterals are great, the near-misses with the trees are superb. It, along with Volcano, are really the only arguably world-class coasters that PKD owns in my opinion. I am really anxious to ride it again after this years retracking to see if it is ruined or if its even better
EDIT: I had to update my rating of this after my last 3 rides this past Tuesday. I dont know if I caught it on a very good day or what, but Grizzly definitely proved to be Top 10 material. Now many people who have ridden this coaster complain that it is far too rough and is uncomfortable, and I wouldve agreed with them up until Tuesday, but having just ridden Hurricane at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion a few weeks ago, it has become clear to me how good the Grizzly actually is. I was even forced to push Volcano out of my Top 10...it was just that good. I have a newly-found love for this ride, and a new #10 coaster
OUCH! The tunnel hurts and this ride is no more than a sled ride through the woods, which, might I add, I was riding with my hands in the air and it hit a branch. How low can Kings Dominion go?
A great coaster. A little bumpy when going through the tunnel, but other than that, its long enough for my liking and going up the large hill is cool, too.
decent air throughout (but not in the front) and had some good side-to-side movement. Not a bad woodie, above average but not great. My biggest gripe - I wish the coaster carried more momentum and speed throughout. After the first drop when it gets back to the apex of the next hill the coaster seems to run in slo-mo. When I rode the ride ops were letting you stay in the train if no one in the station was waiting for your row.
Great, great, great, great, great, great, great! I would reccomend this for anyone. Be careful, however, about having your hands up when going through the tunnel: There is no room for that. I scraped my hands on the top by accident.
