Review of Phantoms Revenge @ Kennywood
-1 Rating Posted by: Jim58 on 8/20/2001 11:40:00 PM
This is a very good ride. Starting at the Alpengeist type drop its speed is eye watering. After the drop this thing screams up into the sky over the station. Then it takes its infamous plunge down the cliffside ducking under the thunderbolt before arcing back up the hill. It then makes another short plunge, shooting back up under the Thunderbolt and does a flyby the stationhouse. PR then does a couple of hops as it turns around and enters the station house. Between the drop and the brakes this is almost a 10. The lack of contour to the 2nd drop keeps it from a solid ten. I like a slightly rounded drop, it hides the track and builds suspense. Now for my real complaints. The day I rode they ran one train. Later in the day with a 90+ minute wait there was still only one train running. The ops looked like the cast of extras from "Dawn of the Dead." So did the public for that matter. We all shuffled along the walkway inch by inch. I started to count the gum on the one roof. We saw a rabbit. The monotony occasionally broken by the lift chain engaging the train. The lift is sooo slow. It easily takes up 3/4 of the ride. Then in a blink the ride is over. It is too short. Unfortunately its location doesnt give it any options to expand. I think my 7 is generous.

7 is not generous, how can you knock points off because of gum on a roof, thats not Kennywoods fault, it gets removed about once a month but people just keep throwing gum on it. Kennywood is a small park and the PR is put in such a small area so you cant expect it t be long, the lift hill is closer to 1/2 the ride, I love the lift, going up so slowly builds up suspense, and when it was built it was the largest coaster(this part is from the Steel Phantom) so the lift technology wasnt as good as it is now.

And the SP came out a couple years before Alpengeist, so its not an Alpengeist type drop.

The line for PR runs pretty fast most of the time. Ride any other rides at Kennywood or was this the only one on your agenda list ?

The reason there was only one train running despite the crowds is that Morgan had problems slowing the train down enough so that it could be stopped before entering the station if necessary. Trim brakes are being added this off-season so that 2-train operation will be in place next year. Theming is also planned for next year.

TRIM BRAKES! Say it aint so Joe! I would rather wait an extra half hour (or hour) than to have another ride wrecked with trim brakes. Nothing destroys the pace of a coaster more than trim brakes.

The trims are at the last bunny hill and dont affect the ride at all.
