Review of Storm Runner @ Hersheypark
0 Rating Posted by: shag9004 on 9/1/2008 10:03:00 PM
Date Ridden: Summer of 2008. Times Ridden: 1 in the second seat. Here once again is a unique Intamin ride. Storm Runner has a powerful launch, a great Top-Hat, and an intense inversion called a Flying Snake Dive. This thing has to be seen to be believed. However, like so many Intaim rides that have been built recently, the restraint system causes a point to be taken away in my book. Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster are 2 Intamin rides that have received perfect 10&#39...s from me. That is not due to the fact that they are located at Cedar Point but rather due to the simple lap-bar style restraint system they have. However with Kingda Ka and their other looping sit-down coasters, these restraints just cause me to have to fight to be comfortable and that is not what a perfect coaster does. Maverick, Farenheit, and Storm Runner are all very similar to me. They are outstanding rides that could be 10&#39...s if their restraints were a little more comfortable. I still recommend the method I described in my Maverick review of placing the elbows against the back of the car and pushing forward slightly when entering an inversion. However, on Storm Runner, I was not prepared and took two seriously hard shots to the neck going through inversions. I will still give the ride the benefit of the doubt and score is as a 9. I know that with another ride, I would have been prepared and enjoyed the elements much more. Some positives of the ride include the launch, the top hat, and the unique inversions. Just be prepared when you enter them or you will leave with a sore neck. Overall Rating - 9.

One noticable drawback to restraints in S:RoS, TTD, and MF is the fact that they have seatbelts in addition to the T-shaped lapbar, and do not accomodate riders of robust proportions. Kingda Ka, SR and Maverick have those judo-chop shoulder restraints, but no seat belt. I am only aware of this as my nephew accompanied me this summer on most of these rides, and MF and TTD did not allow him to board. I still do not understand the Intamin shoulder harness, as it seems to actually do nothing in regard to rider safety. But I will elaborate on that further when I get around to critiquing Maverick and TTD.

On a side note, MF dropped a bit in my ride rating, where TTD far exceeded my expectations. But more on TTD later...I think your comparisions of these Intamin standouts is spot-on. But I do not like the fact that one may have to adjust their ride position with the shoulder harnesses to fully appreciate a rides dynamics.

You really do a good job expressing your enthusiasm in your reviews and it is nice to read new blood writing well thought-out opinions. I typically reserve reviews for rides I am either passionate or spiteful of, and that is evident by the number of my posts since stumbling across this sight in 2003.

BTW, WTF do I have to do to create paragraphs in the ride reviews? I have never been able to fiqure that out, & I do not want my reviews to appear to be a stream of consciousness, or a rambling mess.

Nuge, you gotta hit return and then put a < p > (but without the spaces) between the paragraphs. It took me like three years to catch on to that.

Stream of consciousness normally is a rambling mess. Check out James Joye'.s ".Ulysses". (ranked among the most difficult books to read of all time) or Faulkner'.s ".As I Lay Dying".. Sorry, that was the high school lit teacher coming out in me.

Solid review for a coaster that I tend to think is rather underrated. During my last trip to Hershey the year after this opened, I logged many rides on this beast and loved every single one of them. Oddly enough, although they are the same restraints here that are also found on Kingda Ka and Maverick, I found the Storm Runner ones to be quite comfortable in comparison to the others (which I found to be annoying, especially on Ka).
