Review of Behemoth @ Canadas Wonderland
1 Rating Posted by: sowinski on 5/5/2008 1:13:00 PM
After much anticipation and hype from the coaster community, I was able to get my first 3 rides in on this coaster. The ticket purchasing and season pass processing centres looked crazy. As luck would have it, even though I live in Toronto, I had been on a trip to California in January and already had a Knotts Berry Farm seasons pass. This turned probably a 2hr wait to get into the park into 15 minutes to be in line for Behemoth. When I got there, the line was out of the queue area and working its way along the fence around Sledgehammer which was down for repair. Given that I didnt know the line configuration, I had no idea how long the wait was from the point where I entered the line. Although, even if I could only get 1 ride in today, it would be this one. The line was constantly moving due in large part to 3 train operation. The crew operating the line and ride didnt look terribly efficient. I saw more than a few half empty trains. I surmized that it must be due to people wanting to ride in either the front and back of the train, especially if they were waiting a long time to ride. Someone else asked a staff member, who was moving along the queue with a sign so people knew where the line began, how long a wait to expect and they said about an hour and a half. In less than an hour I was on the ride. It felt like a fast hour since the line was constantly in motion. I barely had time to check out the new Backlot Stunt Coaster line setup and snap a few photos of Behemoth, before I was on the ride. One thing that struck me was how quiet this ride was. On my first ride a ride op pointed me to a row near the middle, which is typically a fairly dead area even on the best hypers. Behemoth was no exception. I loved the train design. The sight lines seem quite good, although I was outside seats for all of my rides, so the story might change after I check out the centre seats. On this ride I chose an outside right seat. After ascending the lift and getting a nice view of the skyline of both Toronto and the park, Canadas largest plunge began. For the size of the first 2 hills I was a bit disappointed in the lack of airtime that I received and I figured that the sharp turn around would kill the speed and make the return trip even more disappointing. I was very wrong. The return bunny hills gave some good to very good ejector air. The helix at the end felt forceless from the seat I was in, although Im not that big of a helix fan to begin with, unless you are talking about the Canadian rock band of the same name If I had only had this one ride to review Behemoth on, I would definitely have rated it lower. After this ride, I thought that Goliath in Montreal was still the best coaster in Canada, but this had taken over the title of the best coaster at Wonderland, at least. Although, that is not a very illustrious title given the rest of this parks coaster offerings. However, after getting off the ride and seeing that the line was now only out to the rides entrance, I figured that I could give the big boy another chance to prove himself. This time I waited for a row that I knew would certainly pack some punch, back row. Again, I chose the outside right seat in the back row. This seat gave a much better ride with better ejector air on the way out and still better air on the way back and some force in the helix. However, something was still missing. The ride felt a little too smooth and not forceful enough. The best hypers usually have some hills where it feels how a roller coaster is portrayed in cartoons. Your upper body stays up in the air and then your lower body gets pulled down the hill in the train and then the upper body snaps down to meet it. Superman (New England),Apollos Chariot, and Phantoms Revenge come to mind as coasters that have this quality on some of their hills. On my third attempt, the ride the line was still quite reasonable. I again waited for the back row but figured I would try the left seat this time. Good<

That was a great tip about where to sit! I cant wait to ride the back left seat! I felt strong floater air on my rides, I cant wait to feel ejector air!

I sat in the back right seat and felt no ejector air whatsoever. This was by far the most disappointing hyper coaster I have ridden to date. I am heading back up to CW in July and will hold off my full review until after then since the park was crazy and we only got one ride in. However, so far behemoth was my least favorite of the Big 3 new rides of 2008. It was a good solid ride but nothing spectactular.

Some of the ride ops really staple you in, but if you can slouch down and forward a bit so the restraint is a bit looser. You can get a better ride.
