Review of Backlot Stunt Coaster @ Kings Dominion
1 Rating Posted by: fergusonat on 7/7/2006 12:03:00 AM
So I finally get to review the aptly named Italian Job: TURD Coaster!!! I will start off by saying that this ride is mediocre on a good day, and this is only if all the effects are working and the speakers decide to deliver quality sound without popping under the extreme volume! The ride begins on a good foot, however. The cars are pretty well themed on the outside and the music thats playing as the train rolls in is a very nice touch. Its when the ride begins is where the trouble starts. The initial launch is weak. In fact, the first time I rode the thing, I barely noticed we even began to launch until we already were at the helix! The helix itself delivers some decent gs, which I will give the ride props on, but the train loses so much speed by the crest of the helix that any precious airtime that could have been salvaged from that pitiful drop is just ruined. The car then flies through some tame hairpin turns and a mediocre overbank. Then comes the stair-scene, which is just pointless. After a low-to-ground turn, you are lifted upwards into a brake-run, where you sit and watch a fake-looking helicopter "shoot" at you with little blinking lightbulbs. The fire effects are cool, but unfortunately dont always work. The water effects are ok, but dont get you wet as some people claimed they would. The launch into the sewer portion of the ride is even weaker than the first, although the ride makes up for it with a pretty nifty pitch-black run until bursting into the sunlight again to finish off the ride. Overall, the ride is just so damn short that a lot is left to be desired. For what it is, it is a decent addition to the park, but the entire situation was handled so poorly by Kings Dominion that the ride could not make up for the parks shortcomings in ride-placement and terrible advertising. The ride is also hideous aesthetically. Not a single bush/tree/weed/blade of grass was planted on the entire site, and the end result is a fugly pile of gravel that is just an eye sore, IMO. In the end, Turd Coaster earned its nickname...

Good review fergusonat. I can understand completely about your feelings for IJSC. When I first heard about PKI getting one of those family launch coasters back in 2005, I really doubted the abilities the ride could ever offer to me. It just seems to be too slow & uneventful, except for the theming. I know that its built for families, but it couldve been a lil more intense in its layout. I doubt that Ill be going to a Paramount (now Cedar Fair) park anytime soon, so I dont have to worry about IJSC right now & how disappointing of a ride it might provide to me in the future

Well thanks, RCGenius...I tried to be as fair as I possibly could in reviewing Turd Coaster, as you might notice from the sparse compliments I had for the ride. Overall, however, the ride just seemed slapped together and not very well thought out. Im sure the kids love it, but thrill-seekers will definitely be disappointed, as to be expected I suppose

Good detailed review. I really want to ride this thing. Its the first major coaster at any park near me (PKD, SFA, or BGE) for a helluva long time. Unfortunitely with Flight of Fear and now Volcano SBNO at PKD I see no reason to go this year.

^Do yourself a huge favor and go next year or maybe even the year after that, just to let Cedar Fair set its roots into the place

... and by "set its roots", he means come in there and remove every ounce of dignity wrapped up in PKDs trees and just butcher the roots of those giant oaks with a machete..

Oh yeah, because CBS wasnt sending the place straight to hell at all...

At least Cedar Fair will keep hell clean, keep the lines of lawyers and accountants moving fast, and throw in a lame B&M =\

Bob is trashing Cedar Fair sort of and Ferguson is trashing Paramount. I think Ive gotta go once this year because I want to go at least once more under Paramount Parks. Ive got 25 dollar tickets this weekend so I may go soon. It seems a lot of people like to bash Cedar Fair these days too, so Ive got to see which is better.

I really am not trashing Paramount. CBS is the problem...Paramount is just the name. The true evil that sent the Paramount Parks into oblivion was CBS and its get-rich-quick mentality. They did not give a crap about the park and it was painfully apparent. Id rather have a Cedar Point wannabe park than a crappy sub-par theme park plastered with avertisements for cheap movies.

I will confess, however, that I will miss the nostalgic sound track that the park plays

^But really, what else will be different besides the fact that they are going to over-break all the woodens into terribly rides? And Im sure they are going to tear down a lot of the themeing that CBS has at least TRIED to put up. C-F wont even try anymore. Well get a B&M, and then be left out to dry.
