Review of Rockn Roller Coaster @ Disney-MGM Studios
-1 Rating Posted by: sowinski on 7/3/2006 1:47:00 AM
This ride is all hype and no substance. The story line is cheezy. The cars look cool and the launch is well done. After that, this ride isnt much better than a jazzed up version of Space Mountain. Extra light in spots removes some mystery surrounding upcoming thrilling elements. Nothing too special. Flight of Fear at Paramount Kings Island is better.

The launch and first two inversions are incredible. Yeah, the ride fades out after that and is anti-climatic, but I think it deserves more than a 6 for the first 15 seconds or so. And you act like Disney is the first park to put the same ride in more than one park. Batman: the Ride, anyone?

"Disney should be ashamed of themselves for selling the public 2 variations of the same ride."

Hold on a minute...what are you talking about? What 2 variations of the same ride? RnR, while not my favorite Disney ride, is unique. There are no other Vekoma coasters with this layout in the US. If you are saying this is another version of Space Mountain, then you should take up another hobby. The two rides feel completely differently. Launch, theme, loops, music, manufacturer, train style, layout, restraint system, visuals...the only similarity between these rides is that they are indoor. Honestly, I could care less if you dont like this ride, but saying something like that is just ridiculous. On your logic, any dark indoor coaster is exactly the same.

All I can say is 0-57 in under 2 seconds and 4.2gs then conversely 28mph and 3+gs. The only thing these rides have in common is they are Disney rides and are in the dark. (This comment now looks silly based on the recent update)

Disney also has variations of the Tower of Terror, but they are unique in their own way. Same for RnR, it has differences that seperate it from the other RnR. It also seperates it from all other dark coasters in my opinion.

There are 2 variations on Mission Space, too... but thats done for the sensible reason that some people cant ride the intense one for health reasons (or cause they just dont want to). Sea World does the same with the Wild Arctic simulator. But SM and RNRC being two sides of the same coin? Say what?!

Wow, I didnt realize people value my opinion so much Let me start by explaining my rating of this ride. For rides, that I think are at the top of their class for that type of ride and a pretty thrilling ride, like Tower of Terror, Ill give them a 10. Some may argue that RNRC is a unique type of ride being an indoor coaster and as such based on the statement I made 1 sentence above should be rated higher. For people who feel this way, your criticism is valid. However, my review was made comparing this as a regular coaster to all coasters that I have ridden. Comparing RNRC to Millenium Force at Cedar Point, for example, which is the only coaster that I have ridden, so far, that I feel is 10 worthy. An indoor coaster has limitations that make it difficult to have the variety and quality of elements that you can have with an outdoor coaster. The one advantage that an indoor coaster has is darkness, which can help by masking upcoming elements in the ride. I feel that RNRC loses this advantage with the lit up sign in the middle of the ride. I took this time in the ride to look around and see what was coming up next. If you rate this as a regular coaster which means as a stand alone outdoor coaster where you can see the track and know what is coming next. This coaster does not have the combined length, variety, speed, and quality of ride to stack up against other coasters that I have given a 7 or higher rating to. Also, its not like I gave the coaster a 1 or something. A 6 rating is better than average. As a thrill seeking rider, it is my opinion that this ride is somewhat lacking. It delivers some jabs, but no K.O. punch. Like I mentioned earlier, I think the indoor format has some serious limitations, unless someone builds a huge warehouse somewhere customized to fit a good coaster and not the other way around. Disney is lucky to have such loyal fans and supporters. Thank you for your feedback. I value all of your opinions. Vive la difference! I probably wont run into you in the RNRC line, though. Ill be riding ToT, instead.

I dont think people are saying anything against you for your 6 rating of this ride. What I think they have a problem with is you saying its the same as space mountain.

I respectfully disagree with you taylorb251. From my reading of the comments above, both the rating and the critique of the ride are being addressed. Also, my review starts by acknowledging differences in the two rides before going on to say that they are variations of the same ride. I never say that they are exactly the same. Although, on a re-read I can see how some of my comments could be misunderstood. Perhaps, some minor editing is in order.

I like your defense of your rating. To me, like the good old days of Catholic School, anything less than 70% was a failure. I rate rides in that fashion and tend then to rate higher with 7 or below being a failing grade for me. And on this site everyone has their own opinion about what number is average.

I would disagree with you sowinski. On post 2,3,5 and 6 they are talking about how you said the two rides are the same. But that doesnt matter now since you updated you review.

You did compare the two, why else would we say you compared the two. But now you changed the review/

i think any coaster that is indoors and dark should get a ten cause you dont know what happens next but rnr sounds better than you make it sound. no offence but realy think it over i havent been on it but have you ever been that scared on a coaster. i just imagine being in the dark going 57 mph and im scared. think it over throughly

Umm, Im not sure what to say to your comments. Many people like this ride more than I do, but I backed up my opinion with reasons why I didnt like it. Sometimes looking at the statistics of a coaster can be misleading. It didnt quite do it for me. I dont really get scared on coasters, unless it feels like the ride is going to fall apart. My review was thought out "thoroughly". I look forward to reading yours.
