Do you remember as a kid building those giant marble mazes with the drops, twists, and helixes and just praying that it wouldn’t collapse while the marbles navigated it? Well that’s pretty much the feeling I get during every single one of my ride’s on Quassy’s infamous Monster Mouse. Seriously if you have never seen the thing just take a look. It looks like one day Herschell decided to build a steel coaster on toothpicks. Very nerve-racking to say the least, especially since the whole support structures violently wobbles back and forth when the cute little mouse cars navigate it.
Not only that, but I have witnessed numerous safety malfunctions involving this ride such as a wheel flying off mid-ride or the cars valleying. However, this isn’t all that surprising after looking at Quassy’s other rides and how poorly maintained those are as well (especially the incident on the Music Fest where a piece of metal flew off, hitting a girl in the face). Also, there’s a rumor that while at its previous location (Rye Playland) one of the cars went flying off the track, killing both riders. Hmmm…
Anyway onto this frightening little mouse. It’s always a walk-on, but single riders beware, since the park actively enforces a double rider policy making this credit challenging for single riders. Ignoring the whole safety issue, the Monster Mouse actually is a pretty good mouse coaster. The whole ride is incredibly smooth through all of the hairpin turns (a rarity on some mouse coasters) and the added thrill of falling to my death just makes those hairpin turns memorable. Also, the first two drops on this mouse are gigantic for a mouse coaster and actually provide some air! Two complaints though about the ride, after the helix, the ride just seems to lose all speed while navigating those final few bunny hills and the final brakes are very rough if you don’t anticipate them, so be warned.
Despite the near-death ride experience this provides, in all actuality the Monster Mouse is one of my favorite mouse coasters. Those two big drops and the terrifying hairpin turns just make this mouse very memorable, making it compare favorably to other mice. However, this certainly isn’t a coaster for the faint of heart because of the aforementioned “issues”. Overall Quassy is a small, family park worth visiting for this unique, almost extinct mouse.
