Review of Alpengeist @ Busch Gardens Williamsburg
3 Rating Posted by: therock on 7/12/2005 1:02:00 PM
I will start out with the rating. Alpie gets my first 10 rating, because it is my favorite coaster in the world so far, invert or not. This might change at some point in the future when I get more riding experience, but at this point in time, Alpie is the coaster by which all others are judged in my view. Although I have an apprecaition for airtime, I am more of a fan of intensity and an innovative element layout. Alpengeist is a well-themed coaster with fake ski lift-type condition signs designed to make the overall theme a synergistic component of the riding experience. The faux snow added to the theming as well, and the weather was horrid when I rode this beast. This began to actually make me believe that I was a wanderer in this fairytale land of doom that designers were pushing upon me. I inadvertently waited on line for the front row, not realizing that there was a clear sign warning me of this. When I finally mounted the haunted beast, I had a clear view of the sudden thunderous rain downpour that I would soon experience. The ride began, and I tried to be brave, but this is difficult when riding the equivalent of a car speeding down the highway at nearly 70mph with no windshield in a thunderstorm. (Oh, did I mention that the car is flying up to 195 feet high in this analogy?) The intial drop was very unique in that it meandered around a decsending turn, giving the impression that it would not be intense. However, the drop is so high that the intensity quickly sneaked up on me with malicious intent, and then the fun began! I grabbed for my glasses in an effort not to lose them in this whirlwind of ferocity that I was experiencing! This ride took me by surprise and I was never really able to regain my bearings. It was a constant struggle for life. I rode it ultra-defensively, and was totally unprepared for its prowess. It came rather close to the ground several times, which was a big plus. The cobra roll over the Rhine River, which is now my favorite inversion because of this ride, was powerful and demanding. It showed off Alpies anger in a way that made me bow in humility. The Immelman was intense, and I felt some good gs on it. I dont think that I had ever experienced a Zero-G roll on any coaster before this one either, and it was a strange sensation of euphoria. In summary, when I mounted this beast, I had no idea that it was the tallest, fastest invert in the world with the highest drop and the largest vertical loop. However, I found all of this out in short order as this ride pleased my senses in every conceivable way that a roller coaster can. I felt totally brutalized in every way after I dismounted Alpie. No matter how much I tried to reconcile my machismo, I cannot say that I had that feeling of conquering a coaster that is the norm after I finally decide to bear down and ride it. All I did was barely survive Alpie, not conquer it, but there is always Round 2! Get ready Alpengeist, because Im coming, and Im bringing hell with me! Kudos B&M on a masterpiece! Aplengeist is FAR more than I ever expected, and is #1 on my list of favorite coasters.

Outstanding review! And not just because this is my #1 too. But it is good to see another Alpengeist fan. It is a great coaster.

HAHAHAH. Thanks everyone for the accolades! I am a yet to be published writer in my spare time so I like to make my reviews interesting and well worded. Ferg, I will approach Alpie with caution next time, but also with vengeace on my mind! War2174, it great to hear that Alpie is also your #1! This coaster was just complete and utter turmoil from beginning to end. Thats what its all about. It just doesnt get any better than that!

Thanks Danny. That is very nice of you. Now I have a high level of achievement to which I must live up, on my next review.

Yep. Its the unparalled champ of the inverts. There arent too many types of coasters that have an undisputed champ like Alpengeist. Anyone could argue what the best hyper coaster or woodie is for days. I think the majority of people who have actually ridden Alpengeist give it its due. Its THE BEST invert and probably will be for a long time.

^Meh...I would argue with that :o It is definitely one of the most ferocious inverts, but I actually preferred Talon and Top Gun overall. I guess Im more into compact inverts...

I would have to disagree also. I have heard a lot of people say that Alpengeist is not their top invert. I dont really think that any ride can be considered the champ of its kind.

Its pretty hard to say something like that, especially since you havent been on all the inverts in the world, man. That being said, Alpengeist is one heck of a ride

It is difficult to crown a definite champ without establishing concrete criteria for this. It is a very subjective thing, and I have ridden far from all the available inverts, but Alpie is my subjective #1 for now.

Okay, scratch that comment. Maybe "undisputed" on a coaster critic site isnt really possible.

For its sheer size and length Alpengeist is king. And I personally prefer it because of its size. Not to mention speed, theming, and a number of other reasons. Im quick to give some of the more compact inverts like Top Gun and Talon props because they are great rides. But for me they dont compare.

And obviously I havent been on all of the inverts in the world. Nor will I probably ever. But so far theres no other traditional invert with its size and speed. Hence the unparalled comment.

And I disagree somewhat with Herc and TheRock about the idea of crowning though.

I do agree that giving Alpengeist the "Invert Crown" is a bit subjective (its just my opinion), but believe it or not there is some thought behind it. Im just playing devils advocate here a little but stay with me. Can there really be a "King of Pop"?

Where does MJ get off calling himself the King of Pop when youre more of a George Michael or Sting fan right? See theres quite a few people that wouldnt call him their favorite pop artist, oh but then theres a few hundred million that would. Hes the king b/c hes immensely popular and b/c of his record breaking stats. It doesnt make him the best, but not many would argue his title. Hmmm . . . Its too bad theres not an inverted roller coaster thats immensely popular with sick stats. Ah well . . . oh wait!

Long live King Alpengeist! :king:

Hey CoasterGlxy, I think that we both had thought behind our assessment that Alpie is the king of inverts. I agree with your conclusion, and I also agree with your reasoning. I just thought that others might have different reasons for prefering other coasters. However, a coaster review is a subjective thing by nature, so it is understood that all comments should be thought-based reflections of personal observation. In conclusion, we are right, and everyone else is wrong. HAHAHAHAH! Just kidding.
