Review of Hydra the Revenge @ Dorney Park

I am not really sure how I want to rate this coaster. Is it a fun coaster? Sure, but it is not as intense as it could be, and seems to lack a great ending that every coaster needs, the kind that makes you get off breathless.

It starts with possibly the best element on the ride, the Jojo roll. This element was the real surprise, the coaster crawls through this roll right out of the station, slow enough that it is smooth with no head banging, but fast enough that you dont hang in the restraints too long.

Another nice element is the first drop. While shallow, it comes right off the lift and provides some nice floater airtime, particualy in the rear of the train. The next series of inversion come very fast and seem to complement each other well, but none are particuarly agressive. I did like the nice tight colbra roll. WHile some would complain that it is a bit rough, I like that it is more compact then others and is disorienting.

The S-turn and bunny hop back into the canyon are very disappointing. The S-turn totally lacks the airtime and laterals that are present on other coasters with the same element, and the bunny has very little airtime as well.

The corkscrew following the bunny is well done, showing some forces, but then the coaster goes into a tight but slow helix that is placed far too high off the ground to be effective visually or with laterals, and then you are done. I truely belive if the helixwere placed lower to the ground, maybe dropping a bit down hill, this coaster would have a kicking finish.

Overall it is a fun and very reridable coaster, and probably a good choice for Dorney, but for those used to the intensity of Lazer down the hill, or the forocous nature of Talan across the midway, this coaster is pretty lackluster.

This is the fourth review, and they all sound about the same. It seems that Hydra isnt quite what we had hoped for. I have gone to the parks website, to see pictures and the POV and it does seem a little weak. I love floorless coasters, so I will have to give it a try, but it sounds about the middle of the road (maybe right along with Batman-The Dark Knight).

I couldnt have given a better overall summary of the ride itself. Everything is right on from what I experienced personally. However, I found the cobra roll to be pretty lackluster in itself. I love looking at it because it is very different, but it just didnt give me anything. It could be that it lost speed while in the middle of it and then coming out of it. Im not completely sure. After the cobra roll, it does just totally kill the ride like stated. I almost totally agree with everything. Its rerideable, but maybe just not so much for me. Im sure that others would like it. It is definately fun, but just give me the Jojo roll and the drop all day and Ill be happy.
