Review of X Scream @ Stratosphere Hotel Casino, The
3 Rating Posted by: biosciking on 1/1/2005 9:34:00 PM
Up until X Scream, I never thought I really had a fear of heights. This ride changed that. This is such a simple ride concept that is so unbelievably freaky it blurs the line between scary fun and just plain scary. X Scream teeter-totters on the very edge of the Stratosphere observation deck, almost 1000 feet off the ground. Riders ride in an 8-passenger vehicle that slides forward and backward on the teeter-totter as it tilts up and down. The ride begins by immediately tilting downward, so the car charges straight toward the edge, and it passes the point where you can still see track below you. All you can do is pray that you dont go flying off to your doom. It stops there for a bit, the platform tilts up, the car rolls back, but before even stopping we tilt down again and once again go hurtling off the edge. This happens one more time. The last time, though, we are dangling off the side for a long time, waiting and waiting for the platform to tilt up again, but it unexpectedly drops down even steeper, which should scare the pants off of anyone. It finally brings us back to safety. I rode this at night, when it was very windy and trying to sprinkle. That added even more to the dread. The first ride took place in the back seat, but I then rerode a second time in the very front. If you live for the rush, I highly recommend this seat. If you get weak in the knees easily, I say stay as far away from anywhere on this ride as possible. X Scream will forever hold a place as one of the scariest rides ever created.

I really liked your review, hope you come back this year and ride Insanity.

Thanks, and I will definitely be trying the new Insanity, even though I know already that it will be even freakier than X Scream (and thats a hard thing to imagine!).

I also enjoyed your review, and Im impressed you could remember all that detail in the midst of what must have been a major adrenaline surge. That last little gag where the ride dips down further probably would have caused me permanent trauma, as Im deadly afraid of heights. I guess Ill have to try out all the Stratosphere rides if I ever get out to Las Vegas, but theyll be taking me off that tower in a straight jacket.

I highly recommend both X Scream and the Big Shot, and High Roller is also worth a try to say youve been on the highest coaster on the planet. On the coaster and the space shot you at least have the peace of mind that the observation deck is below you. On X Scream, that last little bit of security is gone. Like I said, Ive never thought I had a fear of heights, but before my second ride, in the front seat, I was very close to asking the attendants if I could get off. If you already know you have a fear of heights, beware! This ride is that imposing. On a side note, Im honored to have you compliment my review, as each and every review you have written would be a candidate for the best review I have read on this site.

Thanks, biosciking. Incidentally, has anybody stayed at the Stratosphere? Im becoming stupidly obsessed with the idea of an amusement park 1000 feet in the air.

Ive never stayed at the Stratosphere hotel, but I always spend some time in the casino each time I go to Vegas. They have some pretty inexpensive blackjack tables, so you can actually play for a while before losing all your money!

Both X Scream and Insanity were built by Interactive Rides.
