Review of Top Thrill Dragster @ Cedar Point
-1 Rating Posted by: Scott on 11/8/2004 7:07:00 PM
The launch is intense, the drop is great fun. Really quite thrilling. I do, however, wish the ride were a bit longer. Waiting 2 hours for a 15 minute ride is rediculous.

"I felt dissapointed. thats what months of planning and effort were for, a 15 second ride?"
My sentiments exactly. Good review, at least you supported it, and again, welcome to the site

I dont think the last 15 seconds of twists and turns really did anything for Xclerator

Ah, but what about Storm Runner? Does the rest of the layout make up for a shorter launch tower? Im guessing not since TTD is still your top ride.

Thanks for welcoming me. I was a little afraid people would be angry that I brought the rating down. And im just saying It would be nice if Dragster did more twists and turns so that it would be a bit longer.

ScottHot - as long as you back up your rating the quality members of the site will respect your rating. Yes, the elements in Storm Runner add to the ride (I love zero g-rolls) however I just loved my fifteen seconds on TTD. However as others have discussed if the sensation on Kingda Ka equal or beats TTD, the uniqueness will be lost and ratings may have to be amended.

Yes I totally agree with all of that and you make a very intresting point about Kingda Ka. It makes me think of how magnum xl 200 used to be the best ride around and now its ratings are dropping as bigger and better rides come out. I still think magnum is a great ride, although some dont.

One of the hallmarks of a great ride is that it remains a great ride no matter what else is built. If ratings are based on stats, theyll change each time the stats improve. The trend now is to build coasters that appeal to the casual park goer with height, speed, and comfort, and any incremental improvement in any of these categories will provide a temporary ratings advantage. But hanging your hat exclusively on stats can quickly lead to obsolescence (any of my fellow oldtimers remember the sensation caused by Freefall?). Magnum XL 200 is a prime, and rare, example of a ride that is first and foremost a great ride but that also broke records in its day. I wish more designers took their cue from it than from TDD.

Definitly and Magnum is still one of my most favorite rides around. Its true how many designers focus on loops or building really tall rides. As you said "When engineering science builds a 175 mph launch coaster people will still line up for the Coney Island Cyclone".

my ratings of TTD isnt based on stats at all. It is based on the one-of-kind feeling you get from the launch and the thrill of ascending and descending for what seems like forever. When it no longer one-of-a-kind the rating will reflect according. I still love Magnum also. And agree those sensations you get on a great wooden roller coaster Cyclone, Beast, Phoenix, Boulder Dash are unique and can never be topped by stats alone.

True very true Dragster gives you an incredible sensation that you rarely get on a coaster. I cant wait untill Kingda Ka comes out it looks amazing.

No doubt, TTDs rush factor is hard to beat. Ive ridden it again since writing my review, and it has more staying power than I would have thought.

good review, but I have 1 question. How can you see how fast the train in front of you launches?
ibluv on 1/3/2005 7:45:36 PM said:
I think they have a meter that says how fast its going.

Exactly, ibluv...
