Review of X @ Six Flags Magic Mountain

In my opinion, X is the absolute best ride in the world. Until you have ridden this, you have not experienced what a roller coaster can do. The seats of this coaster extend off to the side of the track, rather than ride above or hang below it. They are therefore capable of flipping around as the train is running its course. The motion reminds me of the Zipper flat ride at carnivals, which apparently is from where X drew its inspiration. You go up the 200 foot lift hill backwards, and you get a great view of the park while doing so. When you reach the top, you start to tip back even more, making it feel as though you will do a back flip. You pull out of this, though, and sort of swoop forward as the train plunges straight down this huge drop. This would be extraordinary enough, except that about half way down, you do a complete 180 degree front flip, so that while you were just looking straight down at the drop, you are now looking straight back up at it. You then go through what is being termed a raven turn, which is kind of an incomplete loop. You dont quite follow through to the upside down position while in this "loop." Instead, you travel forward some more through what looks like straight track, except that right in the middle of it you get a surprise 360 degree back flip, which is my favorite maneuver of the whole ride. You have a nice swooping turn next, which is probably the tamest portion of the ride, but this sets you up next for the craziest portion of the ride. There is an essentially indescribable element called a twisting flip, followed by another raven turn, and a yet another twisting flip before hitting the brakes and pulling back into the station, again backwards. Every element comes at you at just full force. Whether you hang on for dear life or let yourself be tossed around with sheer abandon, you will come off this thing in awe. There are some downsides to this ride, however. First off, this is an Arrow, which means it is rough. I always bang the back of my head against the headrest big time during the first twisting flip. Also, remove all items from your pockets before riding, or they will fly out. Next is the sometimes interminable wait in line. I have been in line for this ride immediately at park opening, and still waited more than two hours. This could be due to technical difficulties or just running one train or whatever. Still, get there first thing, because later in the day the line is almost unapproachable. Lastly, this is a relatively short ride. However, X completely makes up for these faults by what it does. I have waited in line for four hours and come off with a pounding headache, yet Im still willing to get in line again and do it all over. It is that phenomenal.
