Review of Son of Beast @ Kings Island
1 Rating Posted by: coaster05 on 10/11/2004 3:06:00 PM
Appearance-8 the track looks amazing from any view in the park, i dont care for the trains the trees around the area are great but closer to the coaster its still pretty bare.
Ride Quality-4 the hill and loop were nice but the other areas left me wanting more. It was very rough, but not sharp pain rough just constant banging rough. the lap bars are pretty tight and leg room is minimal.
Capacity-10 looked like three trains, line moved smooth and the ride ops worked on gettting you checked in a hurry.
Fun- 3 I was disapointed and really wanted more. I just didnt have fun when i was on it. The loop was cool but it is still just a loop. You can get a no otsr loop at a lot of places.
Reride-1 I will probably never do this ride again. I have rode a lot of woodies but few have left me sore the next day. This one did and I dont want anything to come between my enjoyment of the beast when I got to kings island.
overall-26 or 5.2 Ill give it a six because it looks so good but my opinion is its a lot more fun to watch then to ride.

I liked it much more, but nice assessment

Heres what I dont understand. You indicate that you like the Beast but you "wanted more" from Son of Beast. Apart from an extra chain lift, long, uneventful straightaways and maybe a more comfortable ride, what can the Beast possibly offer that its Son is lacking? Lets face it, the best part of Beast is the final helix (which I agree is tremendous), but is it any more thrilling than either of the helices on SOB? I know this is heresy, especially for a diehard wood coaster fan such as myself, but I found the Beast, frankly, somewhat tame until the second lift. I remember thinking that if the whole ride were as killer as the final helix, then Beast would be one of the greats. Unfortunately, the helix is only 25% of the ride. SOB, by contrast, kicks ass from station to brakes.

i totally disagree the hill is nice but you are always just going into some curve or something. the beast is great because it is unique and has stood the test of time. 25 years and the line is still longer than its son and that should tell people something. I also consider myself a wood coaster fanatic since i have rode quite a few and my top three coasters are wood. to me wood is not about height its about ride. there is no airtime on this the train is not comfortable and it is quite rough. you mention the long uneventful straightaways. please tell me another coaster where they can do something like that. lots of coasters have helixs and i find the ones on shivering timbers to be as intense. what i wanted was a ride as good as the beast and this wasnt it for me. im glad you enjoyed it i thought you wrote a great review but it still comes down to personal choice and my choice is ill spend my time on its father so i wont be in front of you in line

No doubt, the Beast is unique, and youre right: I havent seen the likes of those straightaways anywhere else. But given the choice of a heavily braked straightaway or a monstrous, plunging helix at full-throttle speeds, Ill take the latter. Youre also right about SOBs lack of airtime, but I dont think Beast fares any better in this regard. I cant defend SOBs layout as particularly inventive; as another poster pointed out, its basically two helices jointed by a loop. For me, what makes SOB the better coaster is its sustained intensity. If you look at my top ten, youll see that Im not into height and speed per say, but in this case, they make all the difference. I have never experienced another coaster that so tests the limits of wood. That said, out of deference to Beasts mighty reputation and the many learned opinions that sing its praises, Ill ride it some more before reviewing it to make sure Im not missing anything.

i did notice the braking more so then in the past so that is why i have moved this to my third favorite ride.

Bummer. Paramount and Cedar Fair are major violators when it comes to trim brakes, seatbelts, and those stupid headrests on wood coasters. They can ruin any ride. SOBs relatively unrestrained nature is a big plus for me, but it cant last. Incidentally, does anybody know how trim brakes actually work? Can they be set at different levels and controlled from the station?

Man. I wanted to ride this so badly, but this review makes me not want to at all.

Give it a chance, Hercules, and draw your own conclusion.

What wrong with the sob? They wanted to make it bigger and better. They did make it bigger but not better. One big hill and one loop who cares. Woodies are all about the ride not the extreme thrill. The beast has been around for 25 years and look the lines still. Sob has stopped pki from building new coasters and is going to theme park in stead of a thrill park. I love the beast and will always ride it as much as I can when I am there.

I believe trim brakes can be controlled not from the station but when maintenence does their checks in the morning they can set it lower or higher. This is why you sometimes breeze past the trim brakes or sometimes slam into them. Just dont quote me.
