Review of Haunted House @ Trimpers Rides & Amusements
-1 Rating Posted by: adriahna on 8/21/2004 5:59:00 PM
Okay, kids - heres a genuine treasure for you. It might not be for everyones taste in this modern-day, ultra realism world, but for all you history buffs, lovers of the kooky, and the kids at heart, this ones for you. The prime vintage facade draws you in with its wacky, bloodstained bat and great signage, and the ride-in coffins are great. Once inside (this is worth the wait, no matter how long), the old stunts are a thrill to behold, and nothing can prepare you for the bumpy, slanted (often disturbingly so) ride through this chamber of horrors. Bill Tracey touches are in abundance, and do their jobs admirably. There are moments that are genuinely disorienting, one which is just too good to mention here - youll have to check out the site papa1958 mentioned. In all, Trimpers offers a classic, wonderful dark ride that pulls out your inner child, and scares the bejeezus out of it. Primitive, yes - but right up there with Knoebels.

As always, you give a thoughtful and fact-filled review. Because of your recommendation, I am thinking about raising my score to a "9." Im sure the world awaits my decision. Thanks for mentioning my review.

Papa, I think you should base your reviews on your own experiences on rides, not others experiences.

DmctNY8: it is a narrow minded way to look at the world to not revisit your opinions after you have been informed by the thoughts of others. For example, I hadnt really focused on how cool the coffin cars were before I read adriahnas review. Also I have never been to Knoebels but have read repeatedly that that its dark ride sets the standard. It influences my opinion of this ride that adrianhna, whose opinion I respect, sees these two dark rides to be in the same league.

I have to agree with papa, on this one - there have been reviews Ive updated myself, after remembering certain aspects of a ride after reading other reviews. Some coasters are like this, but haunted houses are just so full of details and effects that its easy to forget some by the time you write a review.

Except I doubt you have reridden this ride after reading this review. It is fine to revist your opinions, but you should check out the ride again to see if you see what the reviewer sees. Obviously these were not things you noticed before or you would have given the ride a 9 originally.

I understand where youre coming from, Dmct - but this haunted house is packed full of detail, and its layout is distinctly unique, the stunts almost indescribable. It took me having a second look at laffinthedark.com after riding to remember it all - its almost too much to take in (Knoebels HM is much the same). There were many stunts and effects in this ride that it was hard to keep them all in my head by the time I got to review it, and I can understand where a refresher could be of benefit. Its just so full of, well, great stuff - its very hard to recall every bit - even the great stuff.

adriahna- have you ever been to Myrtle Beach? I hear the Haunted House on the pavillion is really sweet.

Okay but I still think that before changing the review a second look at the actual ride should be in order, but this really isnt worth arguing about.

Agreed - we all agree to disagree!

Anon- You sound like you know, and treasure, your dark rides! I vaguely remember going on Golden Nugget as a very small child with my dad while vacationing in Wildwood. We also would go to AC, which was back in the day before the casinos. I never got to go into Morbid Manor and always regretted it. Do you know the buildings on the OC (Maryland) boardwalk that surround the entrance to the pier rides? I remember there used to be these large creepy signs with a skeletal figure for Morbid Manor on both sides of the buildings. I guess that creeped me out enough back then not to go into that forbidding looking building. There was apparently a fire which totally destroyed the manor. I cant seem to find much info about the place on the net, but its kind of stayed with me. I did mail order a copy of a magazine, I believe Haunted Attractions, that had a story about the fire. As far as the ride-through, I dont remember it ever coming out onto the second level (Rehoboths still does). I remember that before it was redone, it had one of those tunnels you rode through that looked like a giant spiral. Very Twilight Zone-ish.

Cant give a more up-to-date review, but in my potentially distorted memory it came out onto the second floor as long ago as 73(?). Thing scared me so badly I avoided haunts for years - think I remember just dying to go up to those outer 2nd floor doors opening and dreading going back in and down, but I thought the balcony was the only thing on the second floor at that time. Wasnt the original Playland the flat fee amusement park up by 65th street until at least 76, maybe even up to 78? I dont remember a Ghost Ship there, but could they have brought that down from 65th st along with adding space from whatever was behind the balcony in 88? Hope that made sense - again the thing scared me silly so who knows.

I feel for you, erin - if Id gone on this ride as a kid, I would have been scarred for years. Its crazy and creepy in a weird, humorously distorted way - really great from an adult perspective (not to mention from an illustrators perspective, that being my profession and all), but from a kids viewpoint... well, thats just disturbing...
