Review of Cyclone @ Six Flags New England
2 Rating Posted by: bumprnugit on 10/9/2003 6:50:00 PM
I used to love this ride...I mean REALLY love this ride(The Riverside Cyclone.) The original first drop in the back seat had no equal in sheer intensity (headaches be damned!) I even loved the Morgan trains, despite their numerous detractors. If you sat in the first seat of the last car (or any car, for that matter) you could put your feet on the brace for the trailer hitch and "surf" the ride. They also tracked perfectly, offering as smooth a ride as this tempest would allow. Then, enter Six Flags. "If it aint broke, lets break it and fix it." First, they add 4 seat articulating PTC trains. "Wow!", everyone thought, "maybe this will return the ride to its roots" (6-seater PTCs for you neophytes out there.) Not a chance. The ride is rougher than ever, and the cars track horribly. They give a push-and-pull effect in spots, which detract from the rides wild curves and dips. Next add the trims, and the skid brakes are replaced in the station (for two train operation - whenever thats supposed to happen.) Then, they commit the ultimate act of blasphemy; raise the first drop, and take out the swooping turn. Arrgh!! If you have never experienced this coaster before it was "Flagged", than youve missed a really great ride. I wont wax nostalgic of what once was, but suffice to say The Cyclone is a mere shadow of its former self. The third big drop after the Cobb "hoop de doos" is still intense in the back seat, and the visuals of the fourth drop into the structure are still great. Still, it pains me to ride the former "Riverside Cyclone" in its present state. If Bill Cobb were alive today, hed say "HELP!!! Get me outta this box!!!" ...
Used to be a 10; gets a 7 for nostalgic purposes and a few unspoiled elements.

thank you for explaining what happened to this ride. I remember my only previous trip to Riverside when their Cyclone was ranked as one of the best woodies and it sure did feel different in the Summer of 2003 versus 1992

If Bill Cobb were alive today, hed say "HELP!!! Get me outta this box!!!" I love this line. anyways yes the adition of the PTP 2 seater trains was a terable idea. they said it was ment to run with 3 seatrs when it was designed but it never did. The new coaster isnt anythign fantastic a few good drops and allot of pain.

mrc,
The first couple years of operation, the RC did have 6 seater(what you refer to as 3 seater, i.e. 6 riders per car) PTCs. I believe it was in the second or third year of op a funky seat/shoulder belt system was installed for safety concerns, then the park switched to the lighter Morgan trains.

Ok I get your point about 6 seats. but coaster are normaly counted by the bench not the bench times 2 people a seat. But I get what you were goign after. The addition of the PTCs which arnt articulated by the way, which is one of the major problems.

The original PTCs were standard 6 seaters, like on the Phoenix(not to beat this to death, but cars are referenced by seating capacity re: RCBD or ACE census) and the Morgans were articulating. Now that I think back, I believe you are right that the PTCs that were added in 2000 are not the trailer-hitch variety. I havent ridden the Cyclone since shortly before my original review in an effort to keep what happy memories I have of the original intact.

incidentally, i think cobb would have cried for help alterations or no. i read somewhere he had a heart condition and never rode his coasters. its funny, toomer didnt ride his coasters either. sadists! to me stengl seems like the ultimate square who wouldnt know how to have any fun, but i read somewhere that he has been on most of his coasters, including millenium force.

What abotu Batman Dark Knight. he disigned that one. PTC has never main an articulating car. thats why GCI started making there own trains so they coudl disnign The coasters they wanted and have trains that woudl run corectly on them.
