Review of Superman: Ultimate Flight @ Six Flags Great America

This was my first flyer, so I didnt really know what to expect. First things first, facing downward was cool, but the position youre seated in really does not feel like flying at all. Youre really just sitting in a titled chair. Personally, I think laying down flat and facing down would feel much more like flying. I felt the position was rather uncomfortable too. The flying "experience" is totally over-hyped, and I would much rather prefer a B&M invert.

On to the ride. The height isnt too impressive, and the first drop is a standard B&M drop. But the pretzel loop is simply amazing, disorienting, and probably one of the most intense coaster elements ever. Entering it head first is really cool and the tremendous G forces at the bottom are amazing. From watching it and hearing reviews, the rest of the ride looked slow and force-less. Thankfully, it wasnt. The turns and roll were all really fun, but then its over.. all too quickly. Sure, its about the same length (time-wise) as Batman: The Ride, but Batman just feels more satisfying because you do so much more in that time. Superman: Ultimate Flight barely does anything, and its more of a one-trick pony other than the pretzel loop. The way, say, Alpengeist or Raptor feel after theyve exited the mid-course break run, halfway through the ride, is what ALL of Superman: Ultimate Flight feels like. Thats because, basically, it is half a coaster. They couldve had a much larger first half, with the existing stuff (minus the lift) being the second half. It earns a 7/10 for the pretzel loop alone, but the rest leaves much to be desired. On a side note, I like the landscaping SFGAm put in, and Im glad they did. However, the zig-zag queue area sucks and is not big enough to hold the crowds it gets. A one hour line appears to be huge because the line extends out of it into the midway.
