Review of Phantoms Revenge @ Kennywood

The reprofiling of the Steel Phantom has given birth to one of the best coasters I have ever ridden. Prior to my visit, S:ROS at SFNE was my favorite all-time coaster of the 221 coasters I have ridden (and I am an enthusiast who prefers woodies). This ride gives S:ROS (SFNE) the closest competition of any other coaster out there. It retains the one-two punch of Steel Phantom’s glorious first two drops. Then the redesign kicks in taking riders on a rollicking, helice and bunny hill laden run. It uses the terrain beautifully – AND NOT A SINGLE TRIM BRAKE ON IT. The trains are wide, two seat across, and have no headrests to obstruct the view. They employ a unique lap bar and are perfectly designed for the ride this coaster delivers. I love height and speed in my coaster, but, more than anything else, I like fun. This ride is more fun than I’ve had in a long time on a coaster and jumps to the top of my personal top ten list in every category. Just amazing!

Great review, BrooklynRi. I agree with everything you say here about Phantoms Revenge. Its definitely an under-rated coaster and a rare example of how reprofiling can sometimes improve a ride. The original Steel Phantom packed quite a punch, but its reincarnation has made it more re-rideable for the enthusiast and more accessible to the general public without losing the "rollicking" quality you mention. I love rides with guts, and to that extent, I was sad to see Steel Phantom go, but Phantoms Revenge is a worthy and more sustainable successor.
