How can you compair a carousel to a coaster. When this carousel is compaired to other carousels, it comes out near the top. It is my opinion, but that is how reviews should be done.

this is a theme park forum. all rides have to be in the same league because in the end, the overall ride ranking puts this in with the mix of coasters and thrill rides

I look at scoring rides a little bit different, I score them by the type of ride, and compair them to similar rides. Compairing coasters to carousels is like compairing the perverbial apple and orange. I look for different things when I look at the rides, coasters I look for speed, power, thrill, excitement, for carousels I look at beauty, history, eligance. Any good park should have basically the same mix of rides as other parks, so a bad flat ride may be made up by a good coaster, and vise versa. So is the Phynix a more thrilling ride the the Grand Carousel, you bet, but does it hold the beauty and wonderment that the carousel has, not really. When you put on the rides together in one group you end up with questions like that, so that is why I seperate them out. Besides, the Grand Carousel is not just any old carousel, and that is something you can tell right away by looking at it and enjoying it.

thank you for the support smk and meowmix. now Black7, if this were a site where we just rated carousels, this would be highly rated and probably on top overall. the problem is, it isnt. if you look at the top 25 rides list, this is next to such rides such as X and S:UF. Do you honestly think a carousel deserves to be among X and S:UF on THIS SITEs rating sysytem?

That is fine if you think that the only thing that makes a park good is its coasters, but it is not. Yes, I do think that a carousel or any other flat ride has every right to be right up there with any coaster, they can be just as fun as any coaster. I just get peeved when someone posts that it is just a carousel! I also have one other question, did you actually ride this ride, you have not rated anything else at Kneobels, I would think that since the coasters are so important to you that they would be the first thing you rate after a trip there, not some carousel. Or is it just that you cant stand to see an old carousel up there along with the mega thrill rides?

Even thought I havent ridden the one at Kneobels I have been on MANY more. I dont think any even come close to a roller coaster or even a thrill ride. I think you should compare the carousel to all the other rides in the park.. not just other carousels. That doesnt make sense. This is a website with all different kinds of rides that should all be rated in 1 category.

Im gonna have to side with Black7 here ... but for my own reasons.

YES, I think the GRAND CAROUSEL is comparable to X and CORNBALL EXPRESS (and others) in the "Top 25 RIDES" category. WHY? Because just as THE CORNBALL EXPRESS is a perfection of airtime, X & XCELERATOR are perfections in ingenuity, THE BEAST is a perfection in an out of control wood coaster, and THE GRAND CAROUSEL is a true perfection in a carousel. No I dont get the same thrill out of a dark ride or a water ride as I do a coaster, but I still seek them out at parks. WHY? Because I need to cool off, or relax, or keep my fun levels up while letting my body and heart take a bit of a rest, or maybe just because I want to enjoy a ride WITH my fiancee & other guests rather than asking them afterwards what they thought about it after we get off. I think the main problem with the discussion here resides in the confusion of THRILLS and RIDES (or something to that like). I have immeasureable amounts of fun on both SPACE MOUNTAIN and THE HAUNTED MANSION (MK), but its impossible for me to compare them because the fun is totally different. My fiancee has more FUN riding an animatronic dinosaur at Indiana Beach than she does riding THE CORNBALL EXPRESS, but that doesnt make THE CORNBALL EXPRESS any less of a good coaster. Should the smaller park coaster be compared with the "big dogs" of Paramount and Six Flags and Universal? YES, because a coaster is a coaster, and either park is throwing their proverbial hat into that ring. Shoudl Knoebels GRAND CAROUSEL be compared to IOAs CARO-SUESS-AL (sp?)?? YES, for the same reason. But should THE BEAST be compared to THE HAUNTED MANSION? No ... they are unique unto themselves and perfections of entirely different rides ... do I have more fun on either one? No, I have great fun on both, but they are different types of fun. I dont get off of THE LEGEND happy and laughing and singing the "Song of the South" songs I do when I get off from SPLASH MOUNTAIN and I certainly dont hold my arms up and scream and pray for bodily abuse or weightlessness on THE DEN OF LOST THIEVES. But I have incredible amounts of fun on all of them. Ive actually put in a request to add the TOP WOODEN and TOP STEEL COASTERS to this site, in rankings, but thats because I feel the current lists for those rides are biased and not as evenly decided as the TOP 25 RIDES list is here. Just my thoughts...

Thank heavens for reviewers like Black7 & BigJohnWC - who appreciate our carousels so much, just as it should be. There are far too few of them left, not to mention those which offer us the Brass Ring option. I myself would gladly put an artistic, historic, well-kept carousel right up there with a great, old wooden coaster - sure theyre different, but they do compare in terms of craftsmanship and design ingenuity. I know this statement will probably really put some bugs in some reviewers systems, but Im just being honest here. Pay attention to the intricate artisanship in carousels (most were finished by hand, if not completely carved that way), and remember, many of the coaster manufacturers of the 1920s were closely connected to carousel manufacturers - surely some of the glory rubbed off on the latter!

ok if i was in the 1920s i would think carousels are the best thing in the world.but were not in that time period.if he gave the carousel a 7 then he gave it a 7.you cant expect everyone THE GRAND CAROUSEL a 10.I cant review carousels because i havent ridden a carousel in a long time.I couldnt ride a carousel and see a big huge mega coaster in the distance.Carousels are yesterdays thing.
