Review of Ghostwood Estate @ Kennywood

I know this will probably turn out to be a minority opinion, but after only one cycle this is now my favorite shooting dark ride. Yes, I like it more than Men In Black and even Den of Lost Thieves, which was my former favorite.
Since this is a newer ride, the queue on a Sunday was fairly long. It wasnt an hour wait or anything, but it was certainly longer than Im used to waiting for a dark ride.
Before you climb the stairs to the actual ride you have to watch a pre-show. For some reason I kept thinking of the Haunted Mansion at this point, but Im not sure why this was. The pre-show for Ghostwood Estate is just some lame CGI thing and is pretty much as boring as every other preshow out there.
Since we were smart enough to watch the preshow by the exit door, our group of 4 quickly climbed the stairs and were second in line to board the ride. The cars hold 4 passengers and are not guided by a track. However, I did notice a little groove in the floor that the cars probably use for navigational purposes. Sorry kids, were not riding on the $100 million Tokyo Disneyland Pooh ride system here.
The ride itself was great. The guns have visible laser lights so you can see exactly where youre shooting at. The reason I loved this ride so much is because of the gags. There are countless gags that get triggered when you hit the targets, kind of like being inside a classic shooting gallery. Skeletons coming out of coffins, spiders falling on your head, its all here. I laughed non-stop through this ride and exited with a gigantic smile. I have a policy not to say too much about dark rides in general, so I wont say much more. Just be sure to ride this thing next time you visit Kennywood no matter no long the line is. I could see a lot of the gags quickly breaking and not being repaired. So, in a few years this ride might not be as amazing at it is now. The other members of my group did not share my adoration for this ride. I think this might have something to do with the fact that I got way more points (~3,500, I think) than they did and therefore saw more gags go off.

Nice review, I think this is a perfect addition to Kennywoods lineup of rides. I believe the cars are guided by copper lines that are embedded in the floor, so still pretty nifty, if you ask me. Ive been looking forward to riding this little thing and your review encourages me even more!

Im glad you feel this way. I was a big fan of the Gold Rusher, and cannot envision this ride coming even close to the old classic. However, its turning out quite a bit better than I initially envisioned, and Im glad that we didnt just get another Garfields Nightmare. But all will be decided on Wednesday, when I go to Kennywood. (aka: Judgement Day)

I rode Gold Rusher last year and did not think much of it. It was in a very poor state of repair. And I love cheesy old dark rides. This is definitely an improvement.

Really, ginzo? Well, for the small selection of dark rides I had been on, Gold Rusher did what it had to, and for that I liked it quite a bit. However, flaming you for not 100% agreeing with me in a fanboyish manner would accomplish nothing, so I will avoid doing so.

Again, I love old dark rides, like Whacky Shack at Waldameer or the Haunted Mansion at Knoebels. I just thought that Gold Rusher was very run down. It needed a *LOT* of love, which is why I guess Kennywood opted to just replace it outright, which is probably the best thing from a business/marketing standpoint.

Yeah, I guess you're right, after going on GE, GR does seem like its maitanence wasn't very good. Even so, I still liked it, just like I enjoy watching Godzilla movies. Cheesy fun.
