Review of Millennium Force @ Cedar Point
0 Rating Posted by: T-Rex on 12/14/2007 10:11:00 PM
Millenium Force is easily my king of coasters. The first giga coaster still provides an incredible ride. The lift hill gave some great views of Lake Erie, and it was followed by the breathtaking 300ft plunge that completely ripped me from my seat. Then came an amazing overbanked turn and then a speedy tunnel where I felt my face would be ripped off. Afterwards was a massive air-time hill that had me out of my seat going up and coming down, and it was followed by two more incredible overbanks and then yet another air-time hill. Then came yet another tunnel and then a bunny hill giving an insane moment of air. Finally there was another overbanked turn and then the brake run.

Was the airtime mediocre compared to other coasters with airtime?

The airtime is mediocre when compared to a slide.

1. Because this site doesnt have international coasters. 2. Becasue I like it even though the airtime sucks. The ride is still very good and I really like it, however liking it does not mean I am going to give it an atribute that it doesnt really have.

^Yeah, I always chuckle when people claim MF has airtime.

hehe, Millennium Forceless is more like it --- I enjoy the ride, but it is extremely tame in comparison to Maverick, the true king of steel coasters

King of steel coasters? Did Kinzels kool aid go down smooth?

There is floater airtime at three points throughout the ride. First, there is a huge amount going down the first drop, probably the most of any first drop on any coaster...seriously. There is another small pop when going back over the smaller (I think its only 130 feet or so) coming back from Millenium Island. There is also a small pop right at the station on the return in. Let me clarify that this is all floater air. There is no ejector air to speak of.

I totally disagree with the forceless statement. MF is the only ride that consistently makes me "grey out". It gets me everytimes dropping down the hill and going over the over banked curve. I usually get my vision back by the time I exit the first tunnel. This was a ride built for speed and not airtime and without out a doubt does what is was meant to. If you want airtime, go get on Magnum, ride any of the B and M hypers, or take a trek up north to Agawam.

^^Heck, Ive got Maverick firmly at #1. I love that ride from the awesome lift hill to the crazy airtime hill at the end. Too bad its at Cedar Point.

^I can think of a few first drops that I like better than MFs:

-Raging Bull

-El Toro

-Maverick

-Mind Bender

If you look at it carefully, MFs first drop is carefully designed to minimize the impact of that huge drop. The roll over into the drop is quite large and you only reach the max drop angle for a short time before hitting the large pull out. And those airtime moments are so weak you can easily miss them if you arent paying attention.

MF is a good ride that could have been the best if it did a few things differently, like adding real airtime hills and making the first drop crazier. Anyway, its not worth the insane queues (2-3 hours) it always has to me. I did enjoy getting about 7-8 cycles in a row last May on the hotel ERT.

^^I have to agree with that, as I too have always experienced some floater airtime on MF. And the reason I love the very back car (especially the last row) is because you experience a huge amount of it, as you said, going down that first drop. My butt leaves the seat as the train crests the hill and is yanked over, and doesnt come back into contact with the seat until the bottom of the drop. There are the 2 other instances that you mentioned as well, and sometimes Ive gotten some on that second bigger hill heading over to Millennium Island.

Theres no doubt that this coaster was built for speed, as it is relentless from the first drop to the final brakes. And although speed is MFs calling card, the ride is not devoid of airtime either. I guess I too can not understand where some deem the ride to be "forceless".

^I do have to concur about that insane first drop on El Toro, as that is the one first drop that I like better than MFs. Mavericks is quite a punchy first drop as well, especially in the back. I wish I couldve gotten more than just the 2 spins I got on that this past year. As for MFs queues, I guess Ive had some good luck with those or something, because the longest Ive ever waited for it (or seen as the wait time) is 1-1.5 hours, and for me it is definitely worth that wait. The hotel ERTs are a real winner though, especially last year when everyone bolted to Maverick.

Dont get me wrong I really liked Maverick, even being at the point, but it would not make my top 20 for steel, though i could see it replcaing MF as my favorite ride at the point. I find all B@M hypers to produce more air on the first drop then MF. El Toros air is also crazy, the dive machine first drop are also awesome. Between the uncomfortable Intamin restraints and the way you get stapled in, it just does not compare to a ride like Apollos or Nitro.

Maverick is brutally intense in terms of just about everything a hardcore enthusiast could want - airtime, pacing, elements, laterals, positive gs etc. This is in stark contrast to MF which is a finesse coaster with very little raw intensity, which I would think a 300 foot ride would be able to boast of. Instead, we have a giant beast with mediocre airtime at best and a few overbanked turns which really do absolutely nothing for me personally. If MF was a 200 foot coaster, never broke any records, and wasnt inflated by Cedar Points overblown reputation, Im willing to bet it would be virtually unheard of.

With that being said, I enjoy riding Millie and its a great ride, but its got nothing on Maverick which displays a level of unbridled intensity that few new coasters dare to approach...

Hmmm...interesting comments. I love it. I have ridden every coaster mentioned above with the exception of Raging Bull. I can see arguments on every ride mentioned except Mind Bender. It is a nice little rdie (located at my home park as well) but it by no means competes with any of the others mention IMO.

I guess my favorite part of any coaster is a big drop. I always get hammered by my riding buddies because I am such a big fan of dive machines. They cant belive I prefer Shiekra to Montu. I love the B and Ms as well but that first drop on Millennium Force just seems like the longest, best, and combined with the huge overbanked curve, the most intense element on any ride Ive experienced. Thats just an opinion of course.

If one perfers ejector air, El Toro is the way to go. Heck I give up....I love all those rides. You guys are basically discussing my top 10!!!

The only real airtime Ive experienced was on Goliath at LA ronde, though I do have to say I enjoyed it very much, I think I prefer an intense fast coaster with a big drop to a smaller coaster with lots of airtime, but like I said Ive never experienced any ejector air or any really extreme air time before.

I got "oh crap Im going to fall out of the ride" moments in the back seat of Mind Bender during the drops. The lack of computer aided design can make for some gnarly things that modern coasters just wont do. Maybe I just got lucky, but its currently my favorite sit down looper and in my top 10 overall.

I do like the fact of going through inversions without OTSRs. That is a definite plus. You are definitely nt alone as Mindbender consistently finishes in the top 20 each year in the Golden Tickets normally ahead of rides such as Kraken, Hulk, and Goliath at Magic Mountain. I just dont see it and probably wont. I actually prefer both woodies at SFOG to Mindbender. I think the GA Cyclone is highly underrated.

All i can say from my experiences of riding millennium, some rides had some air, others had pretty much none even though i like its speed. For some reason my rides on it during the mid summer when the weather was very hot were the best rides for me, that may not make any sense to anybody else, but i tend it could have to do with the temperature of the track and which may have given it more momentum. Also i had one night ride which was really good. Any time the weather is cool up there the coaster seemed weak.

Any tips on when to ride it during the day?

Your best chance to enjoy MF like most popular rides is early when the park opens. CP offers a program called Point Perks where if you are a season pass holder or stay on site, you get in 1 hour early. That means you will get around 4 laps on MF and still beat the crowd the back way to Maverick. I strongly recommend the season pass or staying at Breakers Express just for the extra hour of ride time.

On a side note, the line moves extremely quickly as they always run three trains. During the week you will probably rarely have mor than a 45 minute wait if that long. The weekends or Friday nights however are a different story. I have seen the entire que filled on a Saturday before.

Can you stay at breakers for the ERT too?
shag9004 on 4/16/2008 6:30:52 PM said:
Yes you can. Every resort guest (Breakers, Breakers Express, Sandcastle Suites) get a card that gets you in one hour before the general public. It is very much worth it even though the resorts are fairly expensive for the accomodations they offer.

Resort guests at Breakers and the suites also get their parking fee refunded. They even offer discounted tickets for CP passes and passes for the water park. I am not trying to sound like a CP commercial (the rooms themselves are not great at all) but the location is excellent and to me staying at Breakers is the best way to enjoy the park.
