Review of Pegasus Roller Coaster, The @ Mount Olympus Theme Park

I try to be philosophical about rides like Pegasus. After all, the kids have to start somewhere, and Id just as soon initiate them on a custom CCI wood coaster as on an Arrow mine train. Yet the bottom line is that, in this case, the mine train would probably be more fun because it would have a more creative layout, some fast turns, and maybe a helix that dips close to the ground. Pegasus, on the other hand, is an uninspiring clockwise circuit around a mildly undulating track. From the looks of it, you would expect some speed and airtime, but it never manages to pick up steam or deliver the goods. True, it does have some relatively substantial laterals, thanks to the shallow banking on the curves, but while this feature usually works great in tandem with other dynamic elements, it cant, by itself, carry a roller coaster, and certainly doesnt save the day for Pegasus. Im already plotting my toddlers eventual roller coaster curriculum (God willing hes interested), and I could picture this being the ride that signals to me whether the boy is ready to graduate from something like the Scooby Doo Ghoster Coasters at the Paramount Parks to something more substantial like the Thunderbolt at Six Flags New England. If hes bothered by Pegasus turns, then Ill know I should just send him to piano lessons. If, on the other hand, I see him shake off the ride and ask for something with a little excitement, then Ill know hes ready for the next step. Seriously, though, anything that builds a kids confidence and leaves him wanting more has its place in the scheme of things. That, plus the aesthetics of the ride lead me to bump this up from a 4 to a 5. I especially like how Pegasus keeps up the themes established by its bigger brothers: the naked wood is appropriately rustic, the station is elevated and the ride begins with an immediate drop, the PTC trains provide some added respectability, and the coaster neatly intertwines with another attraction, in this case the Medusas Drop Go-Kart Track. Overall, however, the ride does not live up to its presentation. In a park dominated by Greek Gods, Pegasus is a reminder that even the mighty CCI was, after all, only mortal.
