Review of Cyclone @ Six Flags New England
2 Rating Posted by: Hercules on 6/6/2005 10:37:00 AM
Well, if anything on my trip to Six Flags New England, I learned that the Cyclone is the tallest wooden coaster in the United States (that was stated by someone in line of Mr. Sixs Pandamonium to which the person that she was telling it to had never heard of the word Pandamonium, so go figure) Anyway, back to the Cyclone. This ride was interesting. Im not totally sure what to say about it or how to review it. It wasnt a bad ride, but there is a really good ride hidden in there somewhere just begging to come out. I rode in the very back car. From the looks of the ride I figured I was in store for some "wicked good" airtime. Then the ride ops came around, pulling my seat belt as tight as it could go. I knew that was not going to be a good thing. The first drop sent me literally a foot out of my seat all the way down the hill and slamed me back down. I thought to myself "This is what I have been missing. Bring it on." I was very happy and was hoping for some spine breaking, rib crushing action. Then came a trim brake. Then a turn, then a little drop, then a trim. Then came more mayhem. The drops gave killer airtime, but remember the seat belt thing? Anyway, Ill get back to that a little later. The violent air was pure heaven and the speed of the ride was slow but intense in spots. It was a long ride and a nice design. The air had me flying out of the seat and ramming back down which is just what I love. "Go ahead coaster, beat me up." I rolled back into the station: hat on sideways, glasses crooked, shirt partially ripped and..... oh yeah, the seat belt thing. At least I was able to walk away with a souvenior from the park without paying more than the cost of parking. I officially have a permenant indent of the metal part of the seat belt ingrained in my intestines. It was not overly pleasent, but does not factor into my rating greatly. Yup, Ill take a nice rough wooden coaster anyday. However, as much as I want to give this something a little better, it is just another case of a chain taking advantage of their wooden coasters. The queue and station were run down and not visually appealing at all. The ride looked horrible with paint flaking and plauged with rust. Im not sure if the reprofiling of the ride did anything to it, but it could be better. Like I said, I wish I could give it more and say more good things, but I cant. There is a good ride down deep in here, maybe it will just take some more searching on my part to find it.

Very good review. I dont understand why you didnt just loosen the seatbelt a little on the lift hill. Thats what I do if their insainely tight. Cyclone is an ugly ride, I agree, but I still dont know why you gave it a 6. Its ejector airtime is insaine...

Ya but its lacking every were else and you only get that in the back. I dont know if you noticed but if you look at the drop you can see a chunk of track below it. that was were the drop went to before the reprofiling. thats all they have done and added a number of trims to keep it slow. Ive had times I rode this in fear that we were going to get stuck it was runing so slow.

Yeah well, I didnt think that the belt would really hinder the ride that much. I rated it more on the ride itself, and mrceagle is right. I did notice the original lift prior to the reprofiling. And yes, those trims really made the ride lack in just about everything. It was really lacking and was probably a very good ride at some point.

I wouldnt call the air "insane". I took another spin yesterday and it was the same as the past two years. Air followed by train bouncing along the track is not good air, it is painful air. A real shame what has become of a coaster that I would have rated a 10 if it was still 1993. I first rode this when it was ACEs #1 wood coaster and it is far from that ride in 2005.

Well I went to the park last weekend and I think their adding another trim. Yeah... the third trim. On the third drop someone got seriously injured because they were sitting in the back seat, so they closed off the back car. Then in the morning I saw mechanics putting a piece of wood on the third drop about the size of a trim brake.

Thats not airtime, it is just violent. By the way, I am lowering the rating from a 6 to a 4 and that is still being very nice.

I agree its verry nice. anyways Ya there is a trim on that third drop. I went twice in August. The first trip there was a trim on that drop I could see it since I was in the front seat. I didnt even ride on my second trip. The train was Squealing so loudly we could hear it from outside the park. We wernt willing to get closer then Blizard River entrance and even then the noise was ear pearcing.

What is very nice, the airtime? I guess you would be agreeing with skierman then because I didnt think that was really airtime at all. It was more like lift you out of your set and slam you down to the point that it is giving you an ass whooping.
