Review of Montu @ Busch Gardens Tampa
0 Rating Posted by: WAR2174 on 4/6/2005 12:42:00 AM
This is one of the top 3 inverts (Alpengeist, Top Gun, Montu), it is smooth, fast, well themed, and has some great inversions. Count me as a convert to the Montu faithful. As a teenager, this didnt do too much for me, but now having ridden more rides and having a deeper understanding of coasters, this shoots up in a hurry. It is quite quick, and is pretty long. Certain parts remind me of Alpengeist, but this is a different ride. The batwing is like a cobra roll, turned inside out. It has a great loop and an awesome immelman. You get some good Gs in the barrell roll. The second half is a kind of weak but the first half makes up for it. Tampa needs to take a leason from Williamsburg in taking care of rides however. Montu is a little run down, perhaps because it never closes like BGW. Overall, this is a great coaster and has earned a spot in my Top Ten.

I agree with you. Although I have limited riding experience, nothing is better than Alpengeist to me either. One day, I will try to get over to montu and make the comparison.

Ehh - I dont understand why you assume "nothing is better than Alpengeist." In fact, most people on this site prefer Montu over Alpengeist and consider Montu the best invert in the world. Montu is also the highest rated looping coaster in the Golden Ticket awards and a few years ago was ranked #3 in the world by that poll, the highest showing ever by a looper. To me, I havent ridden Alpengeist but it does not look like its height could make up for a somewhat boring layout and lack of pacing. Most people I know who have ridden both prefer Montu.

I am not assuming anything. I feel Alpengeist is better. I have never liked this review from myself because it is so vague but it has been a while since I rode it. I dont remember it very much. Therein lies the problem. If it were great I would still remember it. I rode Magnum 16 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Montu didnt thrill me. It is a great coaster but I feel Alpengeist packs a punch unparralled. It is not boring by any stretch and its elements hit you constantly. Most people do like Montu better. I am going to BGT in September, so then I will be able to get a better idea on it. Who knows I may change my mind, but for now, Alpengeist is better.

I am not assuming anything either. I simply made the statement, "nothing is better than Alpengeist to me either". The key phrase is "to me". I cannot like Montu better than Alpie because I have not ridden Montu. This has no bearing on which one is truly better. It merely reflects on my own experience.

Also, peoples opinions differ, and that is fine, but benleibo, I would be shocked if you ride Alpengeist and still feel that it has a boring layout and lack of pacing. You might very well have higher standards than I do, but I really think that Alpies intensity will impress you. Let me know what you think if you ever get to ride it, and I will do the same for you if I ever get to ride Montu.

Alpengeists layout is far from boring, man. In my opinion, it has one of the more interesting layouts of any invert. I pity you, for Alpengeist will remember that statement you just said and the wrath of the Alpen Ghost will be unleashed upon you when you finally do ride this thing. Dont underestimate this ride. I made that mistake, but I came away with a deep respect and a love for the ride. At least Alpengeist isnt killed by trim brakes like Montu supposedly is...

The trims before the batwing are almost never on, and I cant remember the last time they were on for me. The MCBR were really bad a while back, but I think they loosened up on those as well.

I know for a fact that Montu packs a ridiculous g-force for an inverted coaster - I forget what the exact number was but at the bottom of the batwing trench it hits 3.5-3.8 Gs. Montus pacing is the best - and Ive ridden other great coasters like MF, SROS, Boulder Dash, and Nitro and Montus pacing is the best. It takes the inversions at perfect speeds. From what Ive seen and heard Alpengeist takes the inversions, especially the Cobra Roll, too fast. Ill see when I ride it though.

^Ok, so Montus pacing is great...but nobody should say Alpengeists pacing is "lacking", especially if theyve never ridden it. And yeah, the Cobra Roll is insane, but just for the record, it is slowly becoming my favorite part of the ride. The visuals are great, and the whip-factor is addicting

I think its all fake and just part of the governments plan to take over the world.

Hey fergusonat, I see that you and I both use descriptions of Alpie that make it surpass the realm of an inanimate object, into a state in which it has real wrath and that we should fear it. Your comments were hilarious, but true. When I got off of Alpie, I really felt like it had it in for me, and that I had done something to anger the ghost in some way. I have a great deal of respect for this coaster because I really DO NOT feel like I conquered it at all. I hung on for my life the whole time, riding ultra defensively, so I really need to show up for round 2 with Alpie one of these days. I really need to write a review of this invert soon while it is still fresh in my mind. Great comments ferg!

I have tamed the beast quite a few times and have since made it my biotch But getting back on topic, there will always be debates over which Busch invert is better than the other. I personally cant imagine how any invert can contain the same intensity that Alpengeist has in its cobra roll alone, but having said that, Montu looks like the overall better ride. Having ridden TG:TJC, which has a very similar layout, I am sure Montu is a great ride---Im positive its one of the best, but dont look down upon good ol Alpie...because it is truly monstrous and in no way "boring."

Top Gun is freakin awesome, and just barely falls short of Montu in my favorite coasters list.
