Review of Cyclone @ Lakeside Amusement Park
4 Rating Posted by: Scott on 12/10/2004 11:26:00 PM
Wow this underrated coaster impresses me so much! I give Lakeside so much credit for keeping this 1940 marvel open. The first thing youll probably notice is the amazing art-deco station. The lighting flows amazingly well and the station would be an attraction in itself at any other park. Once on the train youll probably notice the fixed lap restraints and loose seat belts. Once on the ride the train goes into a dark tunnel and then starts up the lift. The first drop is a twisting drop off to the left which then throws you into another sharp left and an airtime producing hill. After that the train goes down, goes back up and to the left, then drops once again. After that the cyclone takes you out over some airtime producing hills and drops. The train then goes out over Lake Rhoda giving you an amazing view of Lakeside (try this at night, the whole park is lit up in an amzing way.) Following the gorgeous turn-around the train goes into some small airtime producing bunny hops and twists. Sadly the Cyclone soon ends with the final brake run. The most amazing thing about this ride is that the train is still stopped with manual hand brakes! If there is no or little wait you often get rerides! Even if theres a wait its never longer then five minutes and you can usually hop from the exit back to the entrance. The best part is one ride is only $1.50 and an all day pass for lakeside is $15! Sadly Lakeside is bankrupt and things dont look good for this ride. Paint cans are strewn around the track, one car is in disrepair, and the whole ride itself could use some TLC I really hope some coaster club tries to save this ACE coaster classic. I give Lakeside credit for just keeping this running with the little or no profit they have. Youll never find a ride like this at a six flags. I seriously hope lakeside keeps it open.

Great review Scott. It makes me want point my car west and go. If Lakeside is really that hurting for money, they may want to consider raising the price. People are still lining up for the real (Coney Island) Cycone at $5 a pop.

Thanks Lakeside has a problem because the park is in a really poor area of denver. Its main customers are mexicans and most of them arent willing to pay much. Worse is that lakeside is a small old park so some think an all day pass is too much. Many people say lakeside is an awful park while SFEG has all cookie cutters. They have an old funhouse, tipsy house, flying scooter, roll o plane, and a salt and pepper shaker. All of these rides would be considered an amazing ride to any true ride fan, but sadly many of them have rust and cry out for oil. Yet people say this park is dangerous and run down. Its amazing Denver doesnt embrace this place and all its amazing rides. But there is good news! The whip which had been closed for almost 20 years was recently restored! The old ferris wheel recently re-opened!

That tears it. I love funhouses, the Roll-O-Plane, and Flying Scooters, and as any Coney Island diehard will tell you, the seediness is all part of the fun.

Boy, am I glad I checked this out - this sounds like a neat little park. A real shame that its falling into disrepair - the unfortunate fate of so many small parks - not appreciated until its too late. If Im ever brought to the area, this park is a definite must-visit, I can imagine. What a great list of flats...

If your there youll probably want to check out the carousel at Elitchs. Lakeside has a portable spook house too, Just dont go out of your way too get to this park (Id feel guilty if you had a bad time). LOL

Man I think Id love this place. Unfortunently I live on the other side of the country. Someday... And if I had a few grand laying around that I could donate I would so theyd still be there in 10 years when I finally come around. Keep the faith alive Lakeside!

If Lakeside did unfortunately shutdown, an amusement park company could buy it. The Great American Family Parks have a goal to buy small to medium parks, and this would be a marvelous park for them. All they need to do is buy it, and restore all of the rides.
