Very interesting c.1900 wooden carousel. The horses dont jump; you rock them back and forth yourself. It also rotates clockwise so i take it this one never had a ring machine

I was kidding about the ring machine (I shoulda put an emoticon). In Europe they never caught on like they did in the U.S. And many European-made carousels rotate clockwise, making it more difficult to catch the ring with your right hand.

Good job, ibluv - youre right about the European carousels. Youve been doing your homework, eh??? Although I will add, mrceagle, that the ring machines were actually based on early games played on horseback, wherein riders would attempt to run a fine sword through a ring. Basically a training method for horseback fighting. Thank God we just use our hands nowadays, huh?

Its a shame though that there are very few ring machines left in operation. Too much of a liability for corporate America, I suppose

The list is at the NCA (National Carousel Association) site, at either nca-usa.org or nca-usa.com

I love a carousel with the ring machine intact - even on the primitive Marthas Vineyard carousel (oldest in America), it really is a kick.

The old Lincoln Park carousel is nice, too. It is (or was) operating in Fall River as of a few years ago but I didnt see it listed on nca.

Thanx, mrc. I was beginning to think it wasnt historic enough for nca, but apparently it is.

I did a surch online for it. i cant remember if it was on NCA. Keep in mind that with an Assotioation ot organization, you have to join. they may not be a member.
ibluv on 12/9/2004 6:15:58 PM said:
NCA has a list of all operating wooden carousels in the US and Canada regardless of their age or association with NCA, and for some reason PTC #54 isnt on it.

Theres a reason that some carousels dont go counterclockwise. In the case of European carousels, its better to mount the horse from the left side. Do you now get why it doesnt (and never) had a ring machine?
mrceagle on 10/17/2005 12:00:38 PM said:
True when mounting a house corectly you mount from the left. A ring machine is a device that holds a ring, normaly brass, most traditional carousels had jumping hourses along the in side and stationary houses on the outside. the ring machine provided a chalange for those outer houses and promoted the use of the hourses. also the game style setup got older people to ride. Often there was a target in which you could atempt to hit and get a reation a bell or buzzer. or you could traid in the ring for another ride.
