Review of Hypersonic XLC @ Kings Dominion
0 Rating Posted by: Sephiroth7 on 4/23/2001 9:52:00 PM
I was never on this ride. I wish I could delete my review but i dont care. I give it a 9 to help the ride since I bashed the score before hand. It is not a ten because they did not live up to their promise...

You can ask mark to delete this. An obvious joke to Hypersonic(the user name). He bashed my ride, I bashed his. Dont worry I realize it was a dick thing to do and Im sorry .

i could really care less personally, its just after i saw the ride launch a few times before breaking down i didnt know how anyone could even possibly be sleepy

One question...being as I have never been on this ride I was wondering if it does anything after the launch and the drop. It is a shame if thats all the ride is because they promised a 200ft drop and more to the ride. Still looks like a good thrill though.
Stephen on 5/15/2001 10:39:05 PM said:
after the drop you go around a 40 ft banked turn and then down a couble bunny hop hills that are about 60-70 feet. after the launch the ride lasts a grand total of 17 seconds
Sephiroth7 on 5/17/2001 8:59:46 AM said:
Like I thought...dull. I knew about the 40ft banked turn, but I didnt know about the bunny hills. Basically they used theyre prototype as the ride even though they promised much more was to be added.
Peckernuts on 5/18/2001 10:12:40 PM said:
Who promised more? I work at PKD and we got exactly what they told us we were getting.

Im going to PDK this summer...whats everybody so mad about? I think it looks awesome?
Stephen on 5/19/2001 11:07:50 PM said:
pkd got what they said they were gonna get...but personally i dont see why they didnt get more to the ride. to me pkd is filled with roller coasters that are too short or dull. xlc was there time to shine and it did. i just think it coulda been a little brighter. oh and another thing there is more vertical going up than down....i woulda thought it would be tghe other way around

I can see the confusion. When S+S created the prototype they basically built a replica of Hypersonic in Utah except the hill was 200 ft.. They said that this design was just a prototype and that a lot more would be added to whatever ride they would decide to make in the future. Hypersonic was basically a less intense version of their original prototype. PDK was always expecting the ride they got, but S+S promised more originally. I am not saying PDK promised more, I am saying S+S promised more. It is probably a good ride, but I wish it had more and didnt last around 30 seconds.
Peckernuts on 5/21/2001 4:25:54 PM said:
I agree that there should be more, and there definitely will be more in the future, but this is just a prototype... I think PKD got the short end of the stick, but the "big important" people were probably more concerned with the acceleration to think about the ride itself. Ive never gotten the chance to ride it yet, but I see it all the time, and it is pretty crazy with the acceleration. Ive heard that S&S or whoever designed it already has plans for one that has a 360 ft hill and goes to 100 mph. but thats just a rumor as far as I know, even though it wouldnt surprise me. PKD is a great place but theyre just not brave enough to go all out and get the most bang for their buck. Hypersonic would be incredibley awesome if they could make some special loops. Its just up, down, and around. But you can watch it from underneath which is pretty freaky and cool. P.S., Hypersonic XLC will be featured on the discovery channel "Extreme Rides 2001" at 10:00 pm est on may 28th.

thx peckernuts for the info on Extreme Rides 2001 date. I am always keepin my eyes out for those shows, but this year I had no luck on finding one. Last years show was where I found out about the Hypersonic type ride. They showed the prototype while they were testing it. And I quote them saying "This is just a prototype. The real ride will have more." I hope what u say is true about the 360 lift hill and 100 mph. I am sure I wouldnt find that dull and am certain I wouldnt fall asleep on it either!

Please erase this review Thmeprkcrtc. I dont think this review should be counted for obvious reasons...

You misread what I said. THE PROTOTYPE of Hypersonic is in Utah. It was built in the desert at S+S. The prototype of Hypersonic was taller than Hypersonic. They "promised" whatever ride they used with this technology would incorporate more than just a launch and a hill, however they didnt. I was just bummed they left the prototype as it was and didnt add anything like they said they would.

Seph, I think you might be happy to know that there is a new Thrust Air 2k in construction. I heard about it from www.coaster-world.com; heres the clip:

Japan air thrust coaster to smash speed record
The second Thrust Air roller coaster is currently under construction at the Fujikyu Highland park in Japan. It will travel at 107 mph - beating the current record holders Superman: The Escape in the USA and Tower of Terror in Australia by 7mph. Also, it will feature three towers, with the first reportedly being 324 feet high with a 300 foot drop! The layout may also be different from the oval shape of Hypersonic XLC at Kings Dominion in the USA, the first Thrust Air coaster, but I do not have confirmation of this.

Not quite what I first said about 360 feet but If you really want to ride it, feel free to fly to Japan.

P.S.,
Im really annoyed - Three hills, over 300 foot drop, 107 mph. PKD did get the short end of the stick, but I guess thats what they asked for so I can only whine to myself. And I heard from another website that Cedar Point in Ohio is possibly getting one, too, for next year. How Ironic. Though we may not have the best, well always have the first.

Oh, and another thing... The Discovery Channel saved Hypersonic for last on the E.R. 2001 show. They dubbed it "The Most Insanely Intense Rollercoaster on the Planet." Not bad for a ride soon to be overdone with an even more insanely intense ride... Just incase you missed it.

as ive said before pkd is forever getting short rides to be the first. ex shockwave, first standup on the east coast...drop, vert loop, horiz loop, 2 or 3 drops and thats it. me personally, i would rather them build less short rides and build higher quality rides. look at Busch gardens williamsburg, 4 coasters...alpengiest, apol chariot, lochness and big bad wolf. 4 coasters.....4 coasters that i had more fun rideing that pkds 11. i hope pkd begins to learn after xlc that a 13 second ride can only be top notch for a short while. pkd could use a good traditional steel coaster, personally id like to see a hyper floorless....or just a hyper would be nice. pkds last 3 coasters have been launched (FoF, Volcano, and XLC) and i think they need to go back to something more traditional....one question does anyone know how much pkd paid for XLC? anyway thats my 2 cents
Stephen on 5/31/2001 8:26:46 AM said:
one more thing ive been to pkd 5 times this year and everytime xlc has been broken down for at least 1 hour, i have a season pass and i have yet to ride it due to the 5 hour wait and the people stealing the express passes. btw pkd has a chitty fast pass system, you just press a button and a card comes out, there is nothing stopping you from pressing it 10-20-30 times.....

Peckernuts I think you have the wrong idea about me and PKD. I HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE! I only saw the Discovery Channel ER2000 which presented a short clip of a prototype of a thrust air type ride. You already told me about the ride in Japan earlier in this disscussion, but now you had time to elaberate. Anyway, I dont know much about PKD, but I do know they will get the short end of the stick in terms of thrust air rides...

Im not yelling at you seph, i just hate not seeing credit go where its due. I agree Stephen, that fass pass system is lame. they should do it like IOA and make them pay for it. that would stop the ticket theiving; of course youd have to pay, but theres always a downside to everything. No way out. Just a tidbit of useless info someone might find neat... Originally, they told us at the beginning of the 2000 year that we were gonna get a ride like Stealth at PGA, but by the end they chose hypersonic. I still would like them (PKD) to get a good old-fashioned (nowadays!) hypercoaster or Id prefer a megacoaster taller than Millenium Force! That would rule all and PKD would finally get some credit for building a top notch ride. And Stephen, I talked to some people who work with the hypersonic and the breakdown is usually because that little hook thingy that pulls the car forward doesnt always go all the way back. Half the time when I walk by the ride no one is in the car and that makes me mad because theyre promoting this ride nonstop on tv in VA, but when you get there its not running. They need to get a hint.
Sephiroth7 on 5/31/2001 8:15:21 PM said:
I wasnt yellin at u either...
Stephen on 5/31/2001 8:34:53 PM said:
pecker where in va do you live? anyway, pkd shouldve done what disney did with the fast pass. scan your park ticket and a pass pops out, this prevents people getting 50 passes in 3 seconds. universals is free if im right, you can only have one pass out. if you stay in any of the 2 universal hotels you get no line no wait for teh duration of your stay. anyway the ride looks bad a$$ and i really wanna ride it. also, i wish S & S had made hypersonic seat more than 8 per ride....thats whats killin it. 13 second ride with 5 hour wait, no thanks. anyway im gonna try to get up to pkd wednesday when lines should be light.
Sephiroth7 on 5/31/2001 8:42:36 PM said:
Stay at universal. It kicks so much azz. Believe me on this one...
Peckernuts on 6/1/2001 10:12:17 PM said:
I live about 30 minutes south of PKD, and thats as specific as I feel like getting. Ive been to Universal, and it was ok, but im more of a coaster person than the little simulator rides. B2TF and T2:3D were pretty darn sweet, though. I liked IOA better, but the only real big thing about Hulk is the launch (which is a little bit out-of-date, lol), and after that its actually just another ride. I liked Fire better than Ice, but I cant remember why, now. Anyways, Go PKD!
Stephen on 6/1/2001 10:57:33 PM said:
just a thought...how hard is it to add tracking to a coaster later on? like if pkd wanted to make it longer or add new elements. also i read at thrillride.com that eventually pkd will make hypersonic not reach the top of the vertical hiill and roll back down backwards to screw around with people... anyway thats it, im gonna try to get up to pkd monday or tuesday after exams
Sephiroth7 on 6/4/2001 9:46:48 PM said:
I have a feeling it isnt so easy to do and would guarentee you they wont be adding anything. I just felt like writing this because this is a landmark 30th(!) comment. A great discussion, based on a not so great review.
Stephen on 6/5/2001 10:18:37 PM said:
anyone know how much pkd paid for hypersonic?
Peckernuts on 6/5/2001 10:39:25 PM said:
They probably wont change the track any for Hypersonic... The space is limited for where they put it, and it would take away from its being the "First, Original" Thrust Air 2k. It will most definitely stay the same... Oh, and I heard somewhere (possibly in one of these commemts, but I dont feel like looking back - #32!) that PKD is going to get a S&S Freefall Tower next year... any truth to that? And help me out here, is a Freefall tower the one that takes you to the top and then drops you or is it the one that shoots you up and then you fall? Personally I hope its the latter. They better get a really good rollercoaster instead. they always get a new coaster every 2 years, and SFMM got 4 in one year! Talk about taking your time!
Stephen on 6/6/2001 11:07:20 AM said:
a space shot is the one that launches you up. a turbo drop is the one that goes up slowly and shoots you down faster than gravity. i think S and S also makes like a best of both, which shoots you up and then shoots you down. a free fall tower could be any of their designs. i think they haver all the types on their site www.s-spower.com

I was just thinking, seph. ride it before you give it a score. who knows, maybe youll actually like it!

Pecker the whole point of this review was to piss off Hypersonic cuz he did it to me...I said before I was stupid for what I did and took complete responsibilty for my act of stupidity. And I can tell you I will like it, but once again it is too short...I would probably give the ride a nine anyways. And I dont live anywhere near there so I doubt Im gonna ride it anytime soon...
