 Review of Flyer @ Knoebels
-1 Rating Posted by: adriahna on 9/22/2003 9:16:00 AM
ALL HAIL THE FLYING SCOOTER!!! Sure, I had heard all of the hype regarding Knoebels Flyer, but my god, was I ever unprepared. This is THE gold standard by which all Flying Scooters should be measured. First of all, a disclaimer. Yes, it did take me a good handful of spins to get the trick down just right - it had been some years since my lofty experiences on PKIs - but jeez, once I had gotten my snap legs back, this ride was HEAVEN. Im done for - a Flying Scooter addict - pure junkie. My left arm is all bruised up from the ride - and I couldnt be happier. Hands down, these are probably the best of their kind - I love PKIs, and learned the secret of snap on them - but these are faster, run longer, and best of all - NO STOPPERS!!! So, if youre a Scooter junkie like me, dont walk - RUN!!! - to these as soon as you get to the park. Im a goner, and you can be, too.

Flyer Update---my bruises have just now healed, thus erasing for the winter my little souvenir of what, clearly, was the best Flying Scooter experience of my life. Oh, I cannot bear the wait for next summer...pray for me.

Me either. Leaving the park last Sunday seemed so sad. April seems so far off. I cannot wait for that last weekend in April, once again happily snapping these great flying skooters, and waking the Phoenix from its long winter slumber.

Just to show how much the ride ops at the park care, I was one of the first few to brave the cold, rainy weather to ride the Phoenix in 2003, and after our group got our ride in (and another, they let us stay on, even though some had tickets), they asked us how we thought it was running. The same guys run the ride year in and year out, and they really care about how it is running, and how the riders like it. That is what sets the small family parks like Knoebels apart from the big chain parks.

No joke. I was really impressed by how friendly everyone at the park was, and how quickly and efficiently the ops got the lines to move. Knowledgeable too - I got into a nice conversation with the girl running the Haunted House, all about Pretzel cars...that park is just incredible.

Can someone please explain to this idiot what snapping is? I had to put the flyer on my list for my next Knoebels visit!

OK, basically the goal is to get the flyer to snap. now what a snap is is when the tub you are riding in slows down or even stalls relative to the movement of the rest of the ride. This causes one of the cables (usually the back cable) to slack up. When the tub regains momentum relative to the ride, the cable will violently snap, shaking the tub and actually accelerating it. It takes some skill to be able to do it, and even more skill to do it consistantly, but if you do, the ride feels like it is going to fall apart, and sounds even worse, and you will worry that the next snap will break the cable and you will go flying.

You can find a disscusion and recent video of this here:

the best is when you get off the ride and the you hear the novices waiting on line telling the ride op that car #?? is broken or telling their kids not the get into car #?? because it is broken because of the atrocious sound the snapping cables make. But that sound is not really atrocious, it signifies true Flyer nirvana.

I found some more of these at a little park called " The North Pole-Santas Workshop" in Colorado Springs. It is called Dive Bomber there, the workers let you go crazy with them. And there is never a line, so you can go as many times as you like. I put the park in the suggestion box, but I havent heard anything back. Anyway, adriahna, there are more for you to conquer. It has a beautiful setting too, right at the foot of Pikes Peak.

Yesterday, after you guys left, I had a kid about 3 back of me, and after the ride I looked back and he looked at me with this freaked face on, with eyes wide open and jaw droped a little and he just said "Whoa". LOL Also, while I was flying I happened to peek over to the queue where there was this kid on line for the ride, and his mother actually told him to get out of line because she was afraid for him to get on. Now that is really something.
