I know there's another thread right below this about SFGAm, but since that is more about transportation to the park, I thought I'd create a separate one. If it would be better for it to be under the other one, just let me know and I will gladly move it.

Anyway, things are looking fairly promising for me to be able to take advantage of a work trip to a suburb of Chicago and head up for a day of fun at Six Flags Great America. As it looks now, I would be heading to the park on a Sunday in August (the 10th). I'm really pumped at this opportunity to experience a park that looks really good. Now for the questions, that I'm hoping some locals to that area who visit the park might be able to answer (like Animan perhaps? )

I'll be renting a car, so getting there "should" be relatively pain-free. If driving, are there any routes I should avoid? Ticket is taken care of too, as I found a coupon good for any operating day where adults (up to 6) pay the kids rate of $29.99, so you can't beat that! So, even though I'm not the biggest fan of the concept, with saving money on the ticket I am pondering purchasing a Flash Pass. Would this be necessary (and worth the investment) on a typical Sunday in August? Also, if I pull the trigger on one, I'm hoping a regular one would be fine? Other than that, any tips anyone might have for me to maximize my one and only day at the park would be greatly appreciated! I'd like to hit all the coasters and maybe a few flats as well. Is there a "plan of attack" upon entering the park that works best? And finally, what would any of you guys recommend as "can't miss" coasters/rides at the park?

Many thanks in advance for any help/tips!

I'd rather be coaster riding!

PhantomNik - Glad to hear that your trip is still coming together. As it stands now, I am generally off on Sundays, so I could possibly even meet up with you at the park if you'd like...it'd be great to finally meet a fellow TPCer!

Being a weekend, it will probably be fairly busy, although it is in August, which should be better than July. So, the Flash Pass is kind of a toss-up. I have never gotten one myself, although I have certainly been at the park when one might have been worthwhile. There is really only one way to get there that I know of: I-294 North, and you can't miss it from there, as the park runs along the highway. Regarding rides, Raging Bull is a definite must ride, as are Viper and (I would argue) American Eagle. Iron Wolf, although I enjoy more than most, is skippable, as I Ragin' Cajun', especially if you've been on another spinning mouse before. Ditto BTR on that front. Not that you would want to skip these if you have time...I feel that we have a fairly strong lineup at SFGAm, so if lines are not too long, I recommend hitting all the coasters, like you suggested. Whizzer is a classic and a unique coaster, so that is one you should definitely try to hit up too.

Hopefully some of these tips helped, I'll post more as I think of them, and also as I make my first visit of the season (I haven't been there in '08 yet). And if all works out, you may not have to remember all of this yourself, if we are indeed able to meet on the day of your trip!

Sweet! Thanks so much for all the great tips on SF Great America! I figured you'd be the one to ask about the place. I'm really hoping that things stay together for this trip. Usually I rather loathe business travel, but if I can get to a new park while I'm at it, then it's not nearly as bad!

As for meeting up, I would most definitely be game for checking out the park with a fellow TPC'er! Not to mention, having a tour guide who knows the park as well as you would be most helpful. I will keep you posted as the date gets closer, and if things still look good we can set up things to meet at the park. Thanks!
