YEA- 1st post this season and 1st TR ever!!!

Since I can remember, both my parents had told me about school trips to Rye Beach. They could only tell me hazy details, but stories about a perfectly manicured lawn surounded by rides on the coast sounded great to me. Now 14 and a coaster/theme park lover, I finally convinced my parents to make the hour drive up I-95 from Staten Island to Rye.

The Trip
Today was a great NY day- about 90 with some clouds. When I first saw Rye, it was pretty much what i pictured from books and internet accounts. As we parked near SuperFlight, I had already planned what to do. First, we just walked the grounds. As it was my first visit, I was amazed by their art deco glory along a treelined mall. The beach was clean and filled with people despite 50 degree water. The first ride of the day was the last car on the Dragon Coaster. Having learned wood coasters from the Cyclone, this was practically steel. It was pleasently smooth with just enough rattle and air to remind you it was a woodie. The dragon was one of the most amozing things I ever saw with red eyes and huge fangs. The next ride was on the Derby Racer. Having ridden the one at CP, I knew what to expect. However, this one was less enjoyable. Due to the one foot up one foot down riding position, one ankle was scraped and the opposite knee was brused. Regardless, an intense, fun flat ride. Watching the ride ops jump on and off is nearly as much fun as the ride. Next was the classic old mill. The ride is a classic with decent plot and effects. Its still great even though those anamatronic gnomes creep me out. I dont trust those guys! After the mill, we walked along the waterfront. Next we went to the whip, a classic flat ride that uses centrifugal force to toss you around sharp curves. After various flats, we stumbled upon the auto scooters. They are some above average, hard hitting bumper cars. Two things detracted from it. First, I hate the one way style and second the ride op was screaming turn the wheel litterally every 2 seconds. Next we ran across the mall to SuperFlight. It is a crazy machine- kind of a flying wild mouse with the oddest cars I have ever seen. Once you are in the "cages" in the words of a ride op, the ride is pretty good. After a spiral lift, you go down a short drop, around a curve, through a heartline and repeat. This ride was followed by a mad dash to the front seats of the Dragon. The ride was still good but with a better view instead of extra airtime. This was followed by a ride on an average ferris wheel and then a ride on the beautiful grand carasuel (sp?).
However, I dont understand why everyone has to where a seat belt. This was followed by some seafood from Captain Hook's, a stroll on the boardwalk and a stop for snacks for the ride.
RECAP
VISUALS: Art deco buildings, beautifully maintained classic rides, and a great view of the LI Sound

RIDES: Some good coasters and classics. A good variety of flats too.

Food: Mainly Burger Kings and Nathans with cotton candy and funnel cake stands. For variety try Capt. Hooks on the boardwalk. Dont miss the sweet stand across from the Dragon for fudge, lemonade, candy apples, and other sweet treats.

People: Not badly crowded with some cool people youll meet on coasters. Ride ops were cool and freinds except for the auto scooter girl.

Things to do: More than rides! There is minigolf, a boating lake, pool, beach, musical performances, and even ice skating.

Value: 7 dollar parking but free admission. Buy a ride card if some in the group will ride more than others (you can all share it)Buy the wristband it EVERYONE will ride ALOT(you arent susposed to share it but some people do)

Overall: Great classic park with ride variety. If you are in metro NY and want something different than Coney Island try Rye Playland for the day. 8.5 out of 10 Clicky Web Analytics
